Exclusive Interview with The Hyde Out Band
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
We’ve made music since we were young. We started in high school, playing at the local small venues and school parties. Back then music was at the center of friendships and escapism. Then there were a few years when we took a break from playing and we rediscovered song-writing again only recently, just as a passion, not a career. And the fact that we don’t rely on music to make a living means we are free to experiment with it and do whatever makes us happy.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
As a band, we are influenced by a wide range of styles and while we often like similar things, at times we have musical interests that are polar opposite. We see this as a good thing though, as our music is inspired by a wide range of influences. Take the Smoke and Mirrors album we just released, for example. While the British indie-pop scene of the 90s is a clear thread through it, there’s also a mixed bag of synth-pop, folk-rock, alt-country, prog-rock, etc in it. Our style is just a product of us having a great time!
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
We only ever get to meet up at night time in our own studio. So we literally just play through the night and see what happens! It’s rare for a night not to bear any musical fruits. The folks down the road hate us but we sure have a great time doing it.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
In 2018 as a duo we recorded a self-produced demo album titled “Technicolour Ghost”, a candid exploration of our musical histories. It was hard doing everything alone, from playing every instrument to recording, mixing, and mastering. But we took on the challenge and while the result was hardly amazing, we cherished the whole process from idea to execution. It was a massive learning experience. Another interesting challenge was when in the summer of 2020 we collaborated with musicians from all over the world during the Covid-19 lockdown to record an Italian EP titled “Chiaraluna”, which achieved some success in Italy. It was a completely novel and exciting experience.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Not by a long shot lol.
What are your plans for the near future?
We’d like to continue doing what we do. Make music that moves us and take on all sorts of interesting challenges.
