Toronto based producer “Devious Dreams” talks about his craft, sense of style and more
With his jazz-infused Chill & Lofi sound, Devious Dreams makes music that penetrates the subconscious and speaks directly to the soul. The Toronto based producer’s intricate compositions are a result of obsessive attention to detail. Each track is a world unto itself, filled with warm atmospheres, soaring melodies, and evocative vocals.
Having spent years refining his craft, the young artist is now slowly introducing his creations to the world, starting with the release of his single ‘Learn To Fly.’ With a vault of imaginative music being readied for release, Devious Dreams is preparing to become a major artistic voice of the underground.
How did you come by your stage name?
The concept around devious dreams is a very dreamy sound and spacey vibes visually, the name sort of just came to me out of the blue one day while working on my sound, I plan too visually tell a story through upcoming video releases that will give the brand a backstory don’t wanna give too much away on it yet but it will most definitely be worth the wait.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
Music has always something that I’ve been heavily involved in starting back in junior high when I started playing drums in my school band, over the years I’ve been involved in numerous musical projects ranging over a vast variety of genres including fronting a metalcore band as the vocalist for a couple of years.
My real love and passion have always been making chill / lofi beats/tracks, my love for the production itself started about 8 years ago when I bought my first DAW and I was instantly hooked over time I crafted a unique sound with devious dreams which I have finally started releasing this year.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
My inspirations are super wide across many genres but I like a lot of old school hip hop and oldies such as bill withers, Otis Redding, a tribe called quest, J Dilla and I like a lot of the new school stuff coming from producers such as Sarcastic sounds, C-Lance and Kina the list could go on for days but my music influence’s come from so many places it’s hard to nail down a single artist or genre that I am inspired by as I listen to a little bit of everything genre-wise.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
The latest release I have coming out “Light It Up” is a collaboration between me and 2 talented underground artists, Seattle based Anthony Pardi and the debut release for Scarborough Q out of Toronto, with this track I really wanted to do something different and outside of the box, not following the standard structure for most songs I just wanted too let the artists do what they do best so I made up the beat pitched it too 2 of my favorite artist’s to work with and the track just came together beautifully.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
I would say my greatest challenge has been being my own biggest critic and there was a time I almost gave up on music but thanks to an amazing and supportive group of the producer’s in the Defyre Society I have really been able too to step up my game and push past my own thoughts to bring a quality sound to life, my greatest attribute would definitely be my attention too detail and willingness too take as much time as it needs to make a track a beautiful and vibrant listening experience.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
For me it’s not about being the best or being better then anyone else I make music simply because I love doing it and if I can bring joy into others lives through my art, In my opinion music should be more about bringing a quality sound and an enjoyable listening experience not about who is the best.
What are your plans for the near future?
There are a lot more Devious Dreams coming your way with a single dropping every 2 weeks this year leading up to my debut LP that is stacked with some amazing features that I can’t wait to share, plus a few split EP’s in the works too sprinkle in here and there for the fans include a super dope one with my homie Undetectable Bomber “Living/Dying”.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
