Omega Infinity- Solar Spectre Review
German death/black metal band Omega Infinity has come fresh onto the scene with lyrical themes relating highly to the cosmos around us; the interplanetary realm that many of us will only ever know through telescopes, books, and occasional metal albums. Their debut Solar Spectre puts this focus fully on display, every track on the album saves one named after a planet in the solar system and each one conveying a mood of atmospheric chaos much like the nature of the universe itself.
There are a number of extensive tracks on the album (“Mars”, “Jupiter”, “Neptune”) one can easily sit back and get lost in, though in combination with the more moderately timed numbers they can get tiresome as much of it is dynamically repetitive. For what it’s worth, “Neptune” does break from the mold somewhat by slowing the tempo to a crawl and throwing in clean vocals to make Omega’s intergalactic musings come through clearly.
Tunes of the likes of “Sol” of course continue the sonic realization of man’s place in the cosmic order while making an effort to break from the standard blast beats that define the record, with “Terra” further oscillating between skanks, blasts and ripping fills. The final track “Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell” injects an industrial element into the affair, showcasing a great deal of vocal versatility and effective genre-blending free of the confines of the album’s earlier parts.
All things considered, Omega Infinity has promise as a new metal band though it has plenty of room to grow. There are moments of testing and uniqueness in one track or another, though a large piece of it meanders in the same dynamic realm and goes on for far too long. There’s plenty to explore in the galaxy, as a band of their like should know, and if all goes well their next contribution will boundlessly reflect that truth.
