Interview with Multi-Instrumentalist, and Songwriter WeareLight
How did you come by your stage name?
I wanted to create a name, that would in the listener’s ear instill a sense of family, familiarity. something that said, “you are welcome, as you are.”
when I say that phrase, WeareLight, I don’t see any specific image or stereotype in my mind. I see humans everywhere glowing and growing together. that’s the kind of music I try to create.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I started in music when I was 9 years old. I grew up in a place called San Bernardino CA, and because of how dangerous the city was at that time, I could only stay in my yard…I couldn’t stand playing outside. I snuck my little brothers playskool toy keyboard piano (shaped like an elephant haha.) I got lost for hours in that thing.
I formally learned Alto sax when I was in 6th grade. that translated to keys when I was 14, then guitar bass and a slew of other instruments. Writing music is the only thing I’ve ever done that’s made me feel…real.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
To be honest, I’m a total weirdo. I have this thing that if I see a lot of people into something, I tend to repulse and avoid. I look for the fringe “movers and shakers” of the world. I’ve never really tried to emulate anyone’s style. my favorite people in the world are mainly fictional characters from Anime or some story somewhere. shout outs to my best friend Wes. If anyone, I try to be like him.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
I wanted to create a gift. “Offerings” is a concept…more of a bet I am making with myself. I am betting that there is a Creating source of energy in this Universe. Whoever created infinity…I am offering my music to that source, as thanks.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Anxiety. I am a complete introvert, on my best day. this track is actually a step in bettering that part of myself. I’ve never performed vocally on a track, and I felt like if I hadn’t done this before, maybe trying something new will activate facets of myself. I wasn’t aware existed yet. My greatest attribute I feel is my ability to see and hear the emotions coming from living beings, in my mind. like spiritual chromesthesia I suppose.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
I’m the best at what I am doing, specifically and solely because I am the only one doing what I am doing. More will come, in time.
What are your plans for the near future?
Offerings will be dropping this fall, right now that is total life goal level focus and attention.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Of course my family and friends for their support from day 1. as well as the entire city of San Bernardino. Love y’all!
