Interview with artist Melissa Otero

How did you come by your stage name?

Well, my birth name is Melissa Otero, but my social media name came from the fact that I am both Puerto Rican and British in my heritage. So Ricanbrit fits as the perfect combination!

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I’ve always loved singing ever since I was a little girl, it’s always been a dream of mine to have a loyal fan base and audience that I can connect to and that can relate to the triumphs and struggles that I have been through in my life as I have matured as an artist.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

I would say that my main two influences when it comes to style are Tori Kelly and Lana del Rey. By the way, Lana or Tori, if you’re here listening, we should totally collaborate!

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

I came up with this concept of my new song “Youth” because I wanted a summer vibe type song that reminded me of the simplicities of summer life and time with my lovely boyfriend.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

At times, it gets difficult to release content because as an artist you want each song to be the most perfect, but I’m proud of every single thing I’ve released and I would say when it comes to my work ethic it is sporadic and focused and always driven towards making the best possible music product, and I believe I successfully achieved that with Youth.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

I believe that there have been many greats that have come before me however, I’m hesitant to label myself in that category out of respect to all of the legends that have come forward.

What are your plans for the near future?

I plan to continue releasing more music on a week to week basis that is high quality and very cohesive to my audience. Also, I’m looking forward to graduating from college and getting married to my boyfriend.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?

I want to thank my boyfriend because he helped inspire me to write my first song blue eyes and he always motivates me and makes me feel like I can actually achieve my dreams.

How can fans find you?

They can find me on Instagram and YouTube at Ricanbrit.

What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?

My best advice is for you to find your muse and find what motivates you to write. Once you find your purpose as an artist, you never lose that purpose ever.
