Interview with Crow Bunty Band.
Welcome, Crow Buntry! We are excited to chat with you. Please fill us in on your backstory.
How did the band come together and what is the story behind the name?
Dick Buntry: How we met is Whiskey n’ a good time in Nashville. That’s all I can remember about that. We’re from all over the place. From the great state of Texas to Amish country north of the Mason-Dixon line, all the way to Canada. We just all connected musically at one party or another and here we are.
Magpie Buntry: The name just kinda came to us. We ain’t no bro country band but our first tune was kinda along those lines and supposed to be for a commercial so we kinda settled on Crow Buntry. It’s nice to operate in a comedic spot without being judged on your face or fancy outfits.
How long have you been playing guitar? Do you play other instruments?
Crenshaw Buntry: Been strummin’ the old box for about 22 years since I can remember. Shortly after I was picking up the bass and drums, but my heart was always with my guitar. I like to dabble with other instruments, but typically only until someone yells at me to “Quit it, Crenshaw, pick up your guitar!”
Magpie: Been 16 years or so on the gitfiddle, some of the other guys been playin’ way longer and better. I mess around with singin’ harmonica, and keys but I just love writin’ tunes!
Dick: Been playing the guitar for 27 years now, bass for 15, n been singin’ my whole life since I can remember. Been ticklin’ the ivories on n off for a long time. Was learned in classical and jazz singin’ but ended up mashin’ those styles with some good ol’ fashioned Rock n’ Roll and country.
Ray M Buntry: The Guitbox? I’ve been playing 16 years… Been singin’ scat and ’ boogie’n’ them keyboard tunes since I was a youngin’.
Rude Buntry: I’ve played guitar for about 4 months (Independently learned for 22 years mostly off the youtube).
Crow Buntry: That’s a combined 103 years on guitar boys, we should be a lot better…
You just released a new single, Whiskey Dick Picnic. How would you describe the song to someone that hasn’t heard it?
Magpie: I mean it’s a mixture of sweet and offensive. Kinda has got an old Bakersfield sound vibe as well.
Ray M: This tune will at first lull you into the perfect afternoon with your love, only for it to turn south and blow up in your face.
Crenshaw: No one expects it to happen, but when it does you know exactly what you’re in for.
Tell us what was the inspiration behind the song?
Magpie: Being able to remember, the excitement of your first love and how it feels when it goes terribly south but not in the way you wanted to…
Dick: It’s about not taking yourself too seriously and being true to who you are, regardless of the circumstance. Also, it’s about spreading awareness of whiskey dick which is a terrible time.
If the band had to name one artist that inspires your work the most – who would it be?
Crow Buntry: Dispatch
What do you hope listeners feel or take away after listening to the new single
Dick: I hope people hear the joy and fun that we get outta writing tunes like this. It’s a field bonfire kegger in a song.
Magpie: If we ain’t makin’ you laugh or offending your sensibilities then we didn’t do it right.
