Great to have you on on air. Please, introduce yourself.
Hey all, my name is Drew Ramz and I’m an independent artist residing in Charleston, SC.
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
I’ve always been into music. Since I was a kid & I grew up in the golden era of music where artists didn’t just copy and paste. There was meaning & fire to every track they released. I started musical theatre as a kid & I was hooked ever since with music. I started actually rapping and recording my own music in 2018. Fell in love with the process & I’ve been addicted ever since.
Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?
“Wasted Away” is a pop/hip-hop track that literally explains a weekend between my best friend and me. We would link up, to get a little tipsy, and just enjoy the day chilling to music. When I heard this beat, the many adventures of Drew and Lix came to mind. So I hit up Lix, told him to come down to Charleston & let’s get to recording.
What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?
As an artist, I can be versatile & I don’t get caught in a niche. You can go through the music that I’ve released so far & notice that I can adapt to any beat, any genre, I can sing and I can actually rap. I take a lot of pride in being versatile because I’m able to connect to so many more people.
What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?
I’m me. I’m not a gimmick, I’m not a character, I’m just Drew Ramz. A simple dude who loves writing about things that I can relate to. Every song I write is a story from my past or present that I needed to share. My music is unique because every song is a little story, it’s not random words that sound good put together, it’s a coherent story.
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
My biggest influence artist wise has to be Justin Timberlake and Lin-Mauneul Miranda. Both are surprising answers but JT has always been my favorite artist of all time & Lin when he came out with the musical “In The Heights”, he blended both my passions into one and I was able to explore my rapping ability a lot more thanks to his presence in the game now. He’s phenomenal and I hope to one day work with him on writing a future musical or just sharing the stage with him.
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
I’m a loadmaster in the United States Air Force. My job involves a lot of travel. I also have made friends in many different countries. I think one of the craziest moments in my life was being in Germany at a night club partying with my friends and co-workers & hearing my song “Panties” blare through the stereo system. I remember looking around and seeing girls twerking and people just having a good time & I knew right then and there that I wanted to feel that feeling over and over again for the rest of my life.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
It’s rough man. I am married with two kids, so they come first above everything. Since this whole COVID-19 thing happened, I’ve been a stay at home dad to these little boys. Ones 5, the other 4…so I gotta keep them busy all day. I don’t get to write a lot during the day, so when my wife comes home and before the kids go to bed, I try to sneak to my car & write a little something every day.
When it comes to actually record these tracks, I gotta wait till everyone’s asleep and my studio sessions usually start at 10 pm and go to about 3 am, then I come home, grab 3 hours of sleep, and I’m off to be a dad again.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Respect the process. 20% of being a musician is actually making music. That’s the fun part, that’s the part that keeps me coming back. Advertising, promoting, mixing, mastering, post-production, selling your music, that’s the 80% you really have to work at. You are your biggest advocate and if you don’t believe in your stuff, no one else will.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
2020 didn’t get me down, so nothing will. Stay tuned, I’m focused, I’m expanding, and I’m reaching for that brass ring, I’m gonna grab it and I’m gonna win.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
I got about 25 songs in the queue that are in the final stages of production. I’m set to release one-two every month consistently for about a year. So stay tuned because whatever type of music you like, I promise there’s one for you!
