1Penemy NYC Street artist exclusive interview with Muzique Magazine

Street Artist 1Penemy is a graffiti artist most well-known for his viral mugshots of supermodels on the streets of Soho, New York City. Fans of his art include Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen & Hannah Ferguson.

When did you discover your love for art and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

Back in 2015 when I started treating street artists in my office. I started going to art shows they would invite me to and loved the vibe. I went to Art Basel in 2015 and fell in love with the art scene and I embraced the passion I had for art.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquait When and why did you decide to move to New York? I was born and raised in NYC, I went to Columbia University School of Dental Medicine and joined the United States Navy In 1996.

I entered as an LT and worked my way up to a Commander. I did my surgical residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and The Naval Post Graduate Dental School.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

My greatest challenge is growing my art career and art following in the midst of a global viral pandemic when you can’t do any art shows or show off your art to the public in person. My greatest attribute is I never give up attitude which I have so many people to thank for that.

My parents for the sacrifices they made to push me to believe in myself and help educate me to achieve my goals. Secondly the US Navy, I would not be the surgeon I am today if it wasn’t for the Navy. I had so many mentors in the military, other doctors who took the time to push me and train me to be the best I could and to teach me skills that I would have never learned otherwise.

It was also the little things like taking care of Seal team 4 and Seal team six and learning from those guys that no matter what happens to never give up as you’re never out of the fight.

Who is your role model?

There are three role models I have: First Warren Buffet, the Oracle of Omaha who is one of the most successful investors and philanthropists of our time.

Jeff Bezos who had a dream took a chance and overcame adversity to have one of the most successful companies of our time. Jean Michel Basquiat, as a street artist myself and an admirer of his work, when you sit and in front of it as I have at the Brant foundation you realize that she was a genius whose mind worked in such a wonderful way.

What are your plans for the near future?

I just signed with Pop International Gallery in NYC and will be expanding my art offerings for my fans and clients investing in my art as well as planning art shows and charity events when the restrictions of the COVID 19 pandemic are lifted to allow public gatherings.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?

Bradley Theordore, Derrick Tripp Barnes, Jason Ackerman, Layercake, and consumer art for helping guide and expand my art career.

How can fans find your art?

My Instagram page @1penemy or Pop International Gallery http://www.popinternational.com Jeff the owner of Pop can help assist in buying and investing my art.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?

Ask for help, get advice from other artists and never give up.
