Souljah Bless exclusive interview

Souljah Bless, born John Leon, is a conscious new-age reggae artist that hails from the beautiful island of St.Croix, Virgin Islands.

A big believer in love and unification, Souljah Bless converted to RASTAFARI to help cope with the false truths and steady violence that surrounded him. He began his music career in 2010 with the release of a self-titled project that garnered attention from his peers and listeners from around the globe.

Passionate about music and its possibilities to spread the truth, he linked up with “T,” and Co-founded Conscious Mind Records Inc. where he was able to spread his creative wings and promote unity and awareness.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I discovered my love for music at a young age. I began writing music at 13 years old but I was much too shy and unsure of myself to let anybody see or hear what I had written. It stayed like this for many years until I met my business partner and brother Thomas Jenkins III “T”.

He saw something in me that I did not see in myself and encouraged me to follow my passion and make music. He bought a beat for me and recording equipment and he recorded my very first track self titled “SoulJah Bless”. The rest is history.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

My biggest influence will always be the great Bob Marley, but it’s his son Damian Marley that opened up my mind to the possibilities of merging other genres with Reggae music. I fell in love with Hip Hop early on so mixing that genre with Reggae/Dancehall came naturally to me and Damian has mastered that bridge. After hearing him I was able to cultivate my own style and flow.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

My greatest challenge is overcoming my fears and self-doubt. I know I have a gift but I struggle like most people with doubting myself and it held me back for many years. It’s not until I met “T” and the rest of my CMR family that I began believing in myself and my abilities.

My greatest attribute when it comes to my work ethic is a pure heart. I put my heart into whatever I create and it drives me to continue my journey with faith.

What are your plans for the near future?

I plan to continue to release new music and videos, I got a couple of projects in the works so definitely stay tuned. I also started my acting career this year and had the opportunity to appear in three films, I plan to expand that number 2x by the end of next year.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?

I definitely would like to thank the highest Jah whom without nothing is possible. My amazing family back home and abroad that is the biggest support system, I couldn’t ask for more thank you for always believing in me. I would also like to shoutout my Conscious Mind Records family, it’s #CMRLIFE forever. Big ups to the whole V. I Massive and Crew, I’ll represent always.
