Exclusive Interview with DJ K-Wale

How did you come by your stage/brand name?

It’s funny; I am a big Naruto fan, and one of my favorite characters is Killer B. I created a similar name for my stage name and chose Killer Whale (also because Killer Whales are cool), which was too long, so I shortened it to K-Wale, hence DJ K-Wale.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

I credit my sense of style firstly to my dad. He was a DJ and would play many different genres of music in the house. I remember listening to Soul, Afro-beats, R’n’B, Gospel, Funk, and Hip-Hop when growing up, which I believe created my love of music.

Artists like DJ Premier, Danger Mouse, Daft Punk, Skrillex, DJ Snake, and Diplo have influenced my music. The way DJ Premier infuses jazz and soul elements in his music, how Danger Mouse blends disparate musical elements into cohesive, genre-defying tracks, how Daft Punk can synthesize and create catchy, danceable tracks, how Skrillex has taken dubstep to a new level, how DJ Snake can fuse Pop and Hip-Hop to make great music, are some of the reasons why these artists have been a significant influence to me.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

The name of the song “Cold Streets” evokes the gritty and dangerous atmosphere of the UK drill scene, with references to the harsh realities of life in the streets. It also hints at the cold, dark, and moody sounds that are typical of drill instrumentals, making it a fitting title for a hard-hitting UK drill beat.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

Not yet, but I am getting there. Each day I am getting better. I am learning from others within the industry and practicing my craft. With each song I create, I level up and learn from my experiences.

What are your plans for the near future?

I plan to release a single for each month until June and an Album in October. I also plan to perform at gigs in the summer across the UK and hopefully in Europe. Finally, I am working to hopefully get some of my music in some indie video games.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout-outs?

I want to shoutout the. Pick Up the Mic, who helped to inspire the track.

How can fans find you?

You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok @dj_kwale, on Spotify and Apple Music as DJ K-Wale, and by using my Link.tree page – https://linktr.ee/dj_kwale. Also on my independent label website https://ebi-records.com.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?

Create music that you would want to listen to. Whether it’s on the radio or on repeat over and over again on Spotify or Apple Music, create music you love.
