Project G talks about his sense of style, current project and more
How did you come by your stage name?
My stage name has a funny story behind it. I’ve always wanted a stage name that involves the origin of my name which is, Gabriel. I would use the first letter “G” in different ways and different names, but I was never satisfied. It wasn’t until I was playing one of my favorite games called, “League of Legends”, it’s a very popular PC game. There are “skins” you can use to customize your character in the game.
“Project” is a series of skins that had come out during the time, which are very futuristic and based on the movie “Tron”. It was my favorite and one day I thought to myself, “Project G”, I loved the sound of it and it stuck with me. The name stays true to who I am, I’m a person who has gone through hard times and used gaming as an escape from reality as a child. I’m very proud to have made “Project G” my stage name.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I remember being a kid and the feeling I got when I put my headphones in, blocking out the world, it was therapeutic. Whatever emotion I felt whether it was happy, sad, angry, or motivated, music helped me cope or amplified these emotions. I discovered the love for my craft at the age of 12, I remember I would write in a journal random thoughts and random lines that made no sense but I had fun rhyming.
When I write it’s like a game or puzzle, each line needs to flow after one another. I can’t call it complete until I know I solved every issue. As time went on I would write how I feel in a journal, at 14 I would every other day and go sit in a park writing away my thoughts and dreams that go on in my head. There was a period where I stopped. It wasn’t until my senior year in high school where I started to write again.
At that point I was starting to make music for fun, I made my first official song and I fell in love with the process of doing it. I continued after I graduated, falling more in love the more I did my music. It wasn’t until last year in 2019 when something woke up in me, things started slowly coming together. Small accomplishments for myself where I was proud. It made me realize I have a talent unlike any other and that I can actually go somewhere with this.
2020 I started performing at reasonable size crowds and shows, it was both exciting and relieving. At that point, I told myself this is what I want to do. This is how I want to continue living my life and one day I will be someone, And people will know my name.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
I credit my sense of style to some of my favorite artists I listen to often in this day of age. Lil mosey, lil tecca, Polo G, and Lil skies. The style is bouncy with high pitch melodies that are almost dreamy and tropical. When it comes to lyrics though, they come from the heart and are filled with fun.
That I credit to Tupac, Logic, Eminem, and Nas, my lyrics are influenced by the new generations but the heart and wacky lyrics are influenced by artists I listened to when growing up. My style is very diverse I’d say, It’s something positive as well and powerful with emotion.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
My current project is called “Lemonade”. I just dropped it on July 18 on all platforms. This is my first studio quality and official project of my career. I’m very proud of it as a whole because I worked so hard on it. I came up with the concept specifically for summer.
Juice is somehow associated with my name because I dropped a song in 2018 called “Got The Juice”. Ever since then people that know me have always made a trend that I’m the guy who has the “Juice”. I love juice personally too, especially lemonade. That’s how I created the name for the EP, I kept with the trend and because Lemonade is heavily associated with summer.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Some of my greatest challenges when it comes to my work ethic in dealing with my mental health. There are times when I fall into a depression/anxiety state of mind, I’ve struggled with this all my life. It sometimes interferes when I’m trying to work on a song but I keep pushing.
Another challenge is personal life struggles, my life is a series of many wild events that are out of my control and it gets in the way at the times and I have to put my focus somewhere else. My greatest attribute is being motivated though, even with these struggles I always seem to find a light of hope and remember the people I can’t let down.
I can be kicked down many times but I will always come back standing strong. The best thing about it is when I’m having fun what I’m doing I keep working without thinking about it.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Short answer, no. There is still so much room for me to grow as an artist. Every day and every song I get better and better at what I do. I’m still learning how to control my breath, or learning to advance my skills with doing melodies.
Though I say this, I can proudly say that not everyone has the talent I have. I’m confident with my skills, I’m not the best at what I do, I will always respect the GOATs. Though I will say one day I can see that I’ll be recognized on a higher level that I put my best effort and work into everything I do.
What are your plans for the near future?
My plans for the future is to apply pressure for the rest of 2020. Make and release a few music videos, release a new project, grow my fan base, get my name out to more people; and make new connections that will help me advance with every move.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
I’d like to shout out to anyone that believes in me and push me to be the best artist I will be.
How can fans find you?
You can find me on Instagram @thereal.projectg , I’m the most active on there. My music is out on all platforms, “Project G” is how you can find me.
What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?
My only suggestion is if you are having fun in what you do and believe in yourself more than anything, then keep going. You want it, go get it.
