Interview with singer/songwriter Emily Gabriele aka“EG”

So excited to chat with you today Emily!

We would love to hear more about you – can you give us your backstory and how you have landed where you are now in music?

I grew up in a musical household. We were always listening to music and singing along. I remember getting Barnes & Noble gift cards from my grandparents and always going straight to the CD section to buy the newest pop-record releases.

Throughout school, I was involved in our music programs. I was a member of the school choirs and bands. It wasn’t until my early teen years that I started to write songs, outside of school and pursue, what I view as my own, personal artistry.

I went to Rutgers University and really dove deeply into all the offerings the University and city of New Brunswick had outside of academics. From writing for local press outlets like our University entertainment magazine, The Inside Beat, to partaking in a weekly radio show at 90.3 the Core FM, to performing my songs in the University’s music circuit, I really was focused on experiencing music from all different vantage points.

After my time at Rutgers, I moved to NYC. The NYC music scene is vibrant, constant, and oozing with talent. I have been fortunate enough to connect with talented producers, musicians, and songwriters who have been supportive and inspirational in my pursuit to continue to write and perform music.

How long have you been playing guitar? Do you play other instruments?

I taught myself the guitar around the age of 16. I’ve been learning the guitar ever since. I wouldn’t consider myself a guitarist, first. I can play it well enough to write and perform songs but still have a lot to learn.

As far as other instruments go, I was formally taught the alto saxophone when I was in grade school. I also consider the voice to be an instrument. I sing, and actively work with a vocal coach.

You released a new song titled “Monday” tell us more about it – was this song created during this time of social distancing?

“Monday” was the first song I wrote after I released my project, Special Delivery back in January of 2019. I remember working through it and playing it for my best friend and songwriting partner, Gregg Allen. He made a comment saying, “it always happens that way – you always write a catchy song after you release a project.” Obviously that comment has stuck with me.

If you had to name one artist that inspires your work the most – who would it be?

This is a tough question to respond to this question with just one answer. From a songwriting perspective, I always have The Beatles in rotation. They were prolific, incredible songwriters.

From a career standpoint, Sheryl Crowe, Alanis Morissette, and Stevie Nicks are all amazing female artists who continue to inspire me.

Right now, I’m really into what H.E.R. is doing. Her overall vibe and energy are inspiring.

What do you hope listeners feel or take away after listening to your music?

To me, the point of art in any medium is to elicit some sort of emotion. Whatever that emotion is, it is not for me, or any other artist for that matter, to dictate. I hope listeners feel something when listening to my music. As a fun exercise, if you’re reading this, go and listen to my music, and DM me afterward and let me know how you feel – ha!
