Celebrity Music Producer Richard Robson Talks About Love For His Craft, UpComing Projects and More.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I came to music quite late. My family aren’t musicians so it was very much a personal calling for me. I started playing bass in local bands at the end of high school and almost straight away I was thinking about how to take it further.
Like most teenagers, at that time I didn’t have any academic pursuits that you could call a passion, and there was pressure to make important decisions about what you want to do when you graduate! Music quickly became the answer for me. It was the only part of my late teenage life where everything made sense and which I felt passionate about.
On your upcoming project, how did you come up with the concept?
Working with an artist is always a partnership. I always listen to them and try to find out about them, and what’s going on in their lives so that when we’re working on a song it’s coming from a place of authenticity. The songs that resonate best are always the ones that the artist believes in, so using their own lives as inspiration is key.
As a producer, I try to open the artist’s world up to some new influences, musical ideas and offer a sounding board for their experiences and preferences. Ultimately, it’s the artist’s record and they are going to have to live with it for the rest of their career. It has to be a true representation of who they are today so they can feel confident about it today and tomorrow.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
I have been working in music since leaving high school, and one of the greatest challenges in that time has been staying motivated and staying in the game. The music industry is a very competitive market. You are constantly being judged by your most recent works, which means there is a lot of pressure with every project.
Managing that stress and learning how to make decisions based on what’s best for the music and the artist is vital. Success may come and go and fashions will always change, but the quality of work and commitment to the craft will always have value and be recognized.
What are your plans for the near future?
I’m about to start working on an album project with Electronic Music legend JES called Memento. As one of the most prolific and inspiring songwriters in the dance world, it promises to be an unforgettable experience, including re-works of some of her classic songs and a good body of brand new ones in some new areas.
JES has achieved so much, including three Grammy nominations, Billboard #1 singles and she has an army of loyal fans worldwide. Having worked with her throughout her solo career it’s going to be amazing to be able to work on brand new material and re-interpret some of her best-known songs as well. The album will be out in spring 2020 and we have a lot of ground to cover with new songs, acoustic versions, and remixes to complete. It’s going to be a truly unique project so it’s really exciting to be a part of it.
How can fans find you?

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Follow your passion and try not to be too influenced by what other artists are doing. You need to be relevant, but you also need to be authentic, which means curating your internal dialog and focusing on being the best version of yourself you can be. You need to inspire those around you, so set your goals high and don’t compromise on anything truly important to you.
