The Happy Curmudgeons Band Interview with Muzique Magazine

How did you come by your band name?

The Happy Curmudgeons are a group of studio musicians from the metro Detroit area. The founding member, Dave Hamilton, put the group together in 2015 and they recorded their first album, Meant 2 Be, in 2017. Dave Hamilton & Stu Cameron came up with the band name using the initials from their last names.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

Every person that has played with the Happy Curmudgeons has a deep love and passion for music. The band is totally committed to exploring genres and getting inside the musical notes to express true emotion and feeling. The Happy Curmudgeons allows each musician to bring their influences to the music, thus creating a unique blend of sound.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

The style of the band has been developed over time with an open and accepting attitude towards each musician’s vision. The band plays original music and hopes to connect with an audience that loves what they do and can relax and even heal from their songs.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

The band is currently working on their second album with their producer, Mark Byerly (of the Bob Seger Band). The album, 2nd Chances, should be released by the end of 2021. The Happy Curmudgeons have released three singles from this project already – 2nd Chances, Jack Russell, and the latest single, I Know How You Feel. 2nd Chance is a chance for the band to show their collective talent and songwriting ability.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

The greatest challenge during this project was being interrupted by Covid-19. It has been difficult to stay creative and get to the studio to complete the project. The band is back on track and looking forward to creating thought-provoking songs that will entertain the listener. Staying on track and practicing individually have been key points during this project.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

We would never say we are the best at what we do. We want our work to be the best we can do. Our thought is, if a song sounds great to us, we can find an audience for it. We won the 2020 W.A.M. Music Award for best song in the Americana/folk category with 2nd Chances. We would like to build on that achievement.

What are your plans for the near future?

We plan on working with our producer and Third Man Records in Detroit to complete the 2nd Chances project by the end of the year. We will have some great special guests on the album to help us complete the sound we are searching for on a daily basis. We look forward to playing life again, meeting new people and seeing some new places & venues.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?

We would like everyone who has taken the time out to listen to our music. We truly appreciate the response we have received on social media. We believe if we stay true to our music, we will find fans that value what we do. We do want to thank our artist, Pauly M. Everett. Pauly has done an amazing job with our visual aspect for the band. He has done both album covers and continues to do side projects for us. Check out his Flint Underground project.

What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?

Stay true to yourself and your dreams. Hard work and love will pay off in the end. Do not dwell on being a failure and do not take what the critics say to heart. Find your audience! Check out our new single – I Know How You Feel.
