J GOMES Talks About Sense of Style, Current Projects, and More

How did you come by your stage name?

My real name is Jason Gomes so growing up my mom would yell up the stairs to wake me up for school she would start off with Jason, then Jay, then J Gomes I eventually just ran with it I don’t even know if she knows that’s how I chose my name.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I’ve always loved music since I was a kid. My father was a DJ so I grew up around it and I have been involved with it in one aspect or another, it’s like I can’t shake it it’s in every part of my day somewhere somehow I am sometimes in full conversations with people and at the same time, I’m thinking of lines in my head.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

What style? Fashion? We talking fashion then I don’t try to fit in I just do what I like if it’s dope I’m fuckin with it I was never into being in a room with a bunch of dudes dressed alike!!

Now if we talk about style in music? Growing up I studied Jay z method man, and mase closely those guys were my favorite growing up and played a big part in who I am as a writer.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

MISTER RICHARD PORTER!! Paid in full is one of my favorite movies and the Mitch version of Richard Porter has a lot of similarities to me and my story so I decided to record this project with that concept in mind.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

My greatest challenge is being content with the work I’ll go over it 100 times scrap whole projects start from nothing if I feel like it missing something I’m a competitor so who wants to win! My greatest attribute would have to be the way I create music I’ve always been musically inclined so it comes easy, for me to understand sounds and melodies it’s like it’s my first language.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

ABSOLUTELY!! I’ve only come across a few who can keep up! I know 2 people who can do what I’m capable of in terms of creating and I work with both of them and we’re all 3 a little different from each other as far as the sound we would typically choose for ourselves. So for what I do yes I’m the best but that’s what I do I don’t see anyone where I’m at.

What are your plans for the near future?

Well, I just entered into a partnership with intercept music and method man I got the first project dropping on 11/25/2022 with them and two more sets for January and February I’m working just trying to keep myself in the race.

How can fans find you?

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?

Trust your instinct when creating, a lot of times artists hear certain sounds and automatically do what everyone else is doing on that sound instead of going with their instinct.
