Interview with Roc O Star

How did you come by your stage name/band/brand?

Roc O Star represents a collective of meanings that wasn’t too hard of a task for me to conjure. Firstly, “Roc” is my etymology on the word Rock, which represents toughness and solidness. I realized early on in this business and game of entertainment, I had to maintain a certain measure of toughness. Not only to foster longevity in the business and creative sectors of the game, but also in order to have the ability to mentally endure the disappointments all artists encounter in this business.

The “O” represents the word “Opportunity.” This is something I refuse to just squander away. I’m taking full advantage of my gifts and I’m using them for the betterment of my life and the lives of my loved ones. The surname ‘Star” represents the person I am… a star! And I mean this before the inclusion of music or Roc O Star the artist character. An example of what I’m saying would be; I’m a father, basically a beloved rock star and hero within my own household. So hopefully, the public will feel that and recognizes my fullest potential and will love and support my creative efforts and stage performances and consider me a star as well!

When did you discover your love for music, your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursuit a career in it?

I believe I was destined to do music and to be an artist from my birth. It was up to me to get laser focus, hone my skill and do what I was born to do and what I love doing. I was already an artist before getting into the “industry,” because an artist is one who is constantly creative, and I’ve always been that.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

Quite frankly, the gift of music was passed down to me from my dad’s side of the family. But tragically, he died of alcohol abuse. Music, I think, was God’sway of creating a way out of the chaos for me. Artists that have inspired meare; Muddy Waters, Prince, Bruno Mars, NWA, Linkin Park, and Gucci Mane among many others. I strive to create music that touches the hearts of the listener and at the same time construct a beat that permeates their thoughts for a while

On your current project how did you come up with the concept?

I want my fans to gain an experience and music journey unlike any other. Is my music a different music styling to some? Maybe! Or maybe not, but its non-the-less beautiful and raw, and its my raw truth. So, hopefully my truth will help inspire the masses or be reflective to lives of my fans.

My EPK is rock with soul and a splash of hip-hop. This untapped lane will set me apart from many artists today. This affords me the opportunity to be a global and worldwide star. In addition to the songs, I use cool visuals in my videos to help convey messages of change, hope, despair and inspirations, as told through the backdrop of my personal life experiences.

What are some of your greatest challenges as an artist your craft and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

What drives me is making good music and feeding my family. Also, I have an unrelenting drive to inspire others. I dissociate myself from any semblance of being contrived or not authentic. I’d most rather express messages that will serve as an inspiration in helping others to learn from my mistakes. That is what drives me.
