IMNOTJONES Interview with Muzique Magazine

How did you come by your stage name?

For me, IMNOTJONES represents my personal growth as an artist. “Jones” has always been a moniker I use with different variations. But to differentiate myself from my most recent iteration I chose I Am Not – Jones. It was about growth, and separation from old myself, and old affiliations; part of my transformation as I embark on my musical journey and create a new identity.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I’ve always had different musical interests. I liked Hip-Hop, but at the same time, I liked Metal. In that same vein, my music is extremely versatile and definitely not for everyone, but it’s important that I make music that I would listen to personally – whether it’s indie, rap, pop-rock, or a sub-genre in between.

As for pursuit – ever since I can remember, I’ve been good at telling stories. Even at school, I received accolades for stories I created through writing and film. The musical part of that storytelling felt like second nature as I got older– so soon I realized I could use that talent to deliver powerful lyricism. I feel like I have many stories to tell, and I am able to convert that into music that has meaning, so this definitely drives my passion.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

To begin with, there was never really a grand plan for an EP. It started with an abstract concept for one song which explored a toxic relationship that I would have possibly if I had stayed with an ex. But that small idea added breath to the life of a parallel universe concept.

So I amalgamated many different ex-girlfriends of myself, and people I thought the character I had created would date – and created one ex. From that point, it just came together as a story – an EP that showcases the beginning of a relationship, and the end of it.

What are your plans for the near future?

I only recently started to release music publically, so I’m still experimenting with my sound and style. I want to explore more sounds and see what I can come up with. No genre is off-limits at this point.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout-outs?

Everyone who has ever believed in me. Every single one. And everyone who hasn’t discovered me yet, but one day soon will be instrumental in this journey. Thanks for being a part of something special.

How can fans find you?

Find me on Instagram, YouTube, and other music platforms at @IMNOTJONES.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?

Stop overthinking it. Release. It’s better to have it out there, for the project to be alive, and critiqued so you can improve. As scary as the thought is, if you never take a step forward, you can never progress. Even better, don’t take a step – leap. Fully dive into the things you love.
