Exclusive Interview with Singer and Songwriter “Honey”

How did you come by your stage name?

When I was born my Dad would call me his little “Honey”. From that day on the name stuck and everyone referred to me as Honey!

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

When I was 5 years old I was obsessed with the musical Annie’s theme song “Tomorrow” and decided to sing it for my Kindergarten talent show. My principal happened to be passing by in the middle of my performance, called me to his office afterward, and asked if I would sing that same song for the whole school. I did.

And it was the most amazing feeling I had ever experienced. Granted, I was five years old and had barely experienced life, but I knew that feeling was a feeling I could never give up. I’ve been singing ever since.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

Myself! I wear what I like, I like what I wear. I’m more of a simple outfit, bomb accessories kind of gal.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

I wrote “oh lawd” my last day in the studio. I knew I wanted to write about my faith and about all that is going on in the world. “Oh Lawd” is about all the evil that society (including myself) has succumbed to over the years.

Even though there are so much negativity and toxicity in the world, I find it liberating to express my gratitude for all that is good. The song in its own way is a juxtaposition with the music being very dark and gritty, and the lyrics being inspirational and uplifting.

We have many struggles in this life, but that’s not to be overshadowed by all our blessings. And even though life may have us tempted to look away, we must stay strong, remain focused, and express gratitude for all the gifts we have been given.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

My mental and emotional health has been a struggle for me. Anxiety has such a weird way of creeping up in my daily life and sometimes it can be hard to achieve the simplest tasks. I even find difficulty in something as simple as sending an email. It’s very frustrating, but I’ve found that deep breathing, meditation and just giving myself grace and understanding helps a lot. Patience plays a huge role in my daily life.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

Definitely not! I know what I am capable of, and I know I am capable of a lot. However, that’s not to go without saying that I can always learn more, practice more, and be even better. I try to work on this every day. I’m in competition with myself.

What are your plans for the near future?

2021 is going to be a year of getting to know me more as a person and artist so you’ll be seeing lots of videos, Q&A’s, interviews, and deeper looks inside my life. I also just released my second single of 2021 (ps. make sure to check out “Oh Lawd” and “This Time” on all music platforms), and have more new music coming out this year. Stay tuned!
