Exclusive interview with Cheap Clout

How did you come by your stage name?

So I was at some rock show at the Grog Shop in Cleveland, Ohio. The bass player of whatever band at the time was wearing this shirt that read ‘cheap clout’. I thought to myself ‘shit, that’s a dope band name I wish I would have thought of that…’ Then the person in front of me moved and I saw that his shirt actually said something completely different. I knew right then that if I ever wrote the music, It would have to be under the name Cheap Clout.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

After living my entire life as an African in America, I felt it natural to create something that was just an extension of my own experience. We as human beings are storytellers, and through my music and lyrics, I aim to tell stories.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

Mental health. Work ethic is a funny thing… either I have it or I don’t. On those days when that fire burns hottest, I strive to take advantage of that flame and pump out as much creative work as possible. On other days I struggle to even get the flame lit.

The greatest challenge for me not just in my creative work, but in the whole of life, has been my mental health. It has been both my greatest challenge and my greatest asset when it comes to my creative process. My heart goes out to those who continue to struggle with mental illness.

What are your plans for the near future?

Keep innovating with new sounds, new ideas, and pushing them to their max. I hope to write and record as much music as I possibly can before I die. I’m 21 but have a keen understanding of the everchanging nature of this world. When my death comes, I hope these vibrations will outlast me.

How can fans find you?

I don’t have any social media or anything. I don’t even have a phone at the moment. If you are ever in Cleveland or want to connect, hit me up nicochiobi@gmail.com. Otherwise, perhaps we will see each other in the astral!
