INDIE SPOT
Interview with J Nikolé
How did you come by your stage name?
My stage name is actually just a remixed version of my real name!
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I’ve always been passionate about my creative side since I was a child. I would sing to myself in front of the mirror for hours and put on concerts for my stuffed animals. It took me a while to actually pursue music but I kept asking myself, “why are you still waiting??” Right after I had that conversation with my reflection I began writing music to create in the studio.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
A combination of my mother’s music (Yahmein Love), Jhené Aiko, and a hint of Solange.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
My first single Ocean is actually about my current relationship. It fills me with happiness, love, and pure bliss. Like sitting on a calm beach watching the sunset with the person you love.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Sometimes I can get really bad writer’s block for weeks on a song I’m super close to finishing. I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to my creative side so an incomplete song has left me frustrated at times. But at the same time, being a protectionist is also the best part of my work ethic! I’m all about quality over quantity.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
I’m the best at staying in my own lane. I’m in competition with no one but myself.
What are your plans for the near future?
I’m actually releasing another single before the end of summer! Once that is out, I will be focusing on my EP.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
I’d like to thank my mother and brother for always believing in me no matter what path I choose. My boyfriend for keeping me motivated during times I feel at my absolute lowest. My friends that have continuously supported me since day ONE. And I’d like to give a shoutout to my very small but growing fan base. Trust me when I say nothing goes unnoticed.
How can fans find you?
Fans can find me on Instagram at: @Jadieboo_22
What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?
Keep pushing to make your dreams happen. Someone will always have an opinion and that’s okay. And I know this is super cliche but dreams really don’t work unless YOU do. Do what makes you happy!
