How did you come by your pen name?

My pen name, K. Young is my first initial and last name. I didn’t spell out my first name because the “K” symbolizes my first name, Kraichelle ( little sister), Kyree (our brother who was murdered), and Kyree (my firstborn son). As you can see my mom made our names start with a “K”.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I discovered the love for writing at a very young age. Before I wrote a book I use to write raps in my early teens. I began taking my writing seriously in prison. To be honest I have never known that people could even make money off books.

And dudes were doing it from jail. So, I thought to myself like, I can do that. This was around the time I was just learning about assets and liabilities, business, investing, stock market, etc.. It just all went together because I started realizing that having a job and working for other people isn’t the way to go no more (in which it never was). I also wasn’t going back to my old ways.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

I can honestly say nobody. This is really just me being myself. Once you read Bloodline Gems you will see how much it stands out among the rest. Go check it out. I should have written this book as a movie script.

I mean don’t get me wrong there are a few creative people I look up to such as Steve Jobs. I think creativity is one of the best soft skills a person can have.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

My current book titled “Bloodline Gems” is a really different urban novel. The concept of the book came from me being creative. I have always been told since a child that I was creative. I have no limitations to the way I think. I imagine like a child. I have always had the capability of thinking outside the box. I wrote two books, and a few short stories while I was incarcerated.

At one point or another, I trashed all of them. I just got bord with reading urban/street books with similar storylines. I wanted to read something different, but I couldn’t find anything so I wrote it myself. I really don’t remember how I came up with the concept of a vampire being shipped to Transylvania in a coffin, but mistakenly lands in Pennsylvania – West Philadelphia, and upon him trying to return home he gets addicted to crack cocaine. I knew that my humor needed to be all apart of my book. I knew I needed to stand out from the rest.

I knew that I had to be unpredictable. I don’t like following rules, and I am a natural-born risk-taker. From the personal responses I have received (in and outside of prison) I have done a good job at doing that. People always say they thought this was going to happen or that was going to happen in the book, and I love the fact that readers can’t guess what’s going to happen next in the book.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

Trying to find solitude to be creative. That is a big challenge for me. I think locating a solid team may be a challenge for me. That may be because I am just now starting out and nobody will believe in my vision as I will. My will power. Just that get up and go mentality, I think is a good attribute I have.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

Not to sound cocky or anything, but of course, I am the best at what I’m doing. As far as I know, there is nobody else doing what did. There is no one else in my lane. I have never heard of a book like mines, about a crackhead vampire. Who else writes Street fantasy novels?

What are your plans for the near future?

I’m not sure if I want to leave Bloodline Gems as a stand-alone novel or make a sequel, yet. I would love to write Bloodline Gems part 2, though. As of right now, I am co-authoring a self-growth/financial literacy book with Rolando Demyers, which we will be releasing no later than the end of this year.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?

Even though there are a few people that I can give thanks to that actually deserve it. I’m not. I thank me, and I give shout outs to me for being strong, not allowing the distractions of the world to deter me, and never giving up on my vision. But I do want to give a shout out to all my supporters, though.
