Laura Clare Talks In Detail About Her Music, Inspiration & More
Laura Clare has just returned to Australia from LA where she has been recording and writing with some of the best writers and producers in the industry. Her sound is bittersweet, her dark lyrics clashing perfectly with her soft sultry voice. Her lyrics are her weapon, and every word hits you with punch and poise making you feel like you’ve just beat up by a feather.
Laura has spent the last few years writing her latest EP and album in London, Sweden, and LA. Her soon to be released music video was filmed in the red sands of the Mojave Desert, and we can’t wait to see it! Her 2 song EP Lost gave us teaser tracks On My Way and Primal both of which are contrastingly different.
Primal was originally to go to famous pop singer Rhianna but after being held for two months she decided not to release the song. Bad for Laura Clare but great for us as we get to hear it exactly as Laura wrote it, and, Oh My! It’s saucy! Her other single on my way couldn’t be more different lyrically as she shows us a little glimpse of her softer side that we don’t often see. ‘On My Way’ is extremely easy to listen to and has already seen a popular following Spotify.
The next few months are going to be slapped with some serious hits from Laura with the release of her much anticipated single Fearless, and not too soon after Patterns. We are excited to see what the future brings for this talented artist, one thing we do know, it sparkles with possibility. This chick has the star quality you very rarely experience.
Who influenced you to become an artist/band? Why?
Tracy Chapman was very influential during my childhood. I feel her lyrics helped me to grow into the person I am today. I love an artist who is unapologetically themselves. The other reason I love Tracy Chapman is her low voice. Growing up I felt almost ashamed to have a low voice and her music was one of the only female artists I could jam to.
What are you currently working on and how can the people find you?
I am releasing my main single to this EP in April, it’s called Fearless and is most definitely my favorite song to date that I have written. When did you start making music and taking it seriously?
I started street performing when I was 8yrs old with my uncle who is a mime artist. Eventually, I got the nerve to go out on my own and started to street perform as my dad had a weekly market stall in one of the biggest outdoor markets in the southern hemisphere. The first time I performed I made $400 and from there I was hooked. I started writing age 14 and found it to be a great outlet for what was going on for me at the time. At 20 I was discovered by American Music producer Moz who is signed to Dark Child. I was at a showcase in LA and from there we started working together.
Today’s music seems to be about collaborations with the “hottest” artist out. Who would you want to work with on a project? And why?
I would love to do something with Marshmello, he is a great musician and has created so many opportunities for up and coming artists.
Do you feel that the industry needs more artist like yourself? Why?
I think that the music industry needs variation and integrity. So yes, it does. I’ve dealt with major labels first hand and as fantastic as it is to have a major label on the side, there is a lot of compromises. By the time you get to the product you are very rarely the artist that you set out to be. You are no longer doing it for the art, you are doing it for success. Sometimes that can be a good thing, but most of the time people lose connection with your music. I am a big believer in authenticity and staying true to yourself and your purpose.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Run towards rejection. Don’t be afraid of being knocked back because every now and then you hear a yes, and it only takes one yes to completely change your life.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Definitely not. I have come a long way, but I can always do better. Sometimes it’s not about being the best, it’s about the opportunities you create for yourself. I think not being ‘the best’ has meant I have tried a lot harder than someone who is naturally talented. I have obsessed about music every day, dissected lyrics, contacted countless producers and writers that I respect and taken them to coffee just to pick their brain. I don’t ever think I’ll be good enough in my eyes and that works for me.
