Behind The Scenes
Waylon Reavis talks about launching Wake Up Music new Rock division, Upcoming projects and more
You are now launching a new division of Wake up! Music called Wake up Music Rocks (WUMR). Tell us about that.
I am excited to make opportunities for rock and metal groups alongside with Pepper Gomez. She decided that she wanted a rock and metal division to her label. I have been in this business for 25 years and Pepper felt that I would be a good fit for A&R and to lead Wake up Music Rocks. I have a lot of experience in the industry. I also get to work beside my wife Julie Reavis as she is the manager’s side of the company.
When did you discover your love for music?
When I was a very young boy. My sister played piano and I always played around with it. Music just came naturally for me. I mean who doesn’t love music?
When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
May 5, 1995. When I first witnessed Korn on stage.
When did you know you were going to make music for a career?
That night. I always knew I wanted to write and sing but something was different that night. I knew then my life would never be the same.
How do you feel about the present state of the music industry?
I don’t feel any way towards it. It’s still just music to me. The world changes yearly. If you can’t move with it you will get left behind.
If you had the option to change anything about the music industry what would it be?
Well, I have been given a pretty big opportunity now so let’s see what I can change!
What projects do you have in the making currently and what are your plans for the near future?
We are not allowed to talk about our current projects at this moment. But WUMR has some big things coming down the pipeline. I would like to launch WUMR the right way.
Once I have established the label, I plan on helping younger groups in the industry. There is so much talent out there that is not being heard. I want to help them have a voice. This is also Pepper’s vision for WUMR.
How did you meet Pepper Gomez, Owner of Wake Up! Music? What’s it like working alongside her?
Pepper sent AKC a message on social media. My wife runs all of our pages. Julie answered Pepper after remembering a message from her two years prior. I wanted to hear what she had to say and offer. Here we are one year later and Pepper is family. The love she has for music is insane but her love for her artists is inspiring.
She goes over and beyond. With her, I found someone with who I enjoy working. Pepper and I don’t always see eye to eye but that’s why it works in the end. Then we sit back and laugh about it. Pepper is one of a kind. She makes you feel like family.
Do you think a resurgence of rock and metal is happening?
Yes, I do. Look at all bands coming back from the early 2000s. I’m very excited for the year!
Is there anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to thank my wife, Julie, for always pushing me to be my best daily and Pepper for giving me the opportunity to be something more in the industry. I’m excited about the future.
Will, you still being doing AKC now that you have a new role in the industry?
Yes. I will never stop making music. It’s my time. That is my first love!
