Valentina Grisafi, the acclaimed Sicilian pianist and composer who has long been admired in the United States for her artistry and numerous accolades, has once again achieved international recognition in the International Youth Music Competition. She was recently awarded Second Prize at the International Youth Music Competition (IYMC) in Atlanta, USA, for her composition Sicilitudine.

Grisafi had just returned from New York, where she participated in the official awards ceremony and winners’ recital at one of the world’s most prestigious concert venues, the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in Manhattan. The event brought together 155 musicians from 24 countries, with Grisafi proudly representing Italy as the sole Italian participant.

Reflecting on the experience, she shared: “It was an immense emotion—I lived a dream I never thought I would realize. I am honored, grateful, and happy for this precious recognition and for having had the chance to perform my work in the Big Apple, a city that represents inspiration, opportunity, and boundless artistic energy for musicians worldwide.”

The jury praised her performance with the following words: “You have a true gift for melody. This is a beautifully expressive piano piece, and the sensitivity to melodic form shines through in every part of it. Keep nurturing this talent: you are on the right path.”

Originally from Caltabellotta, a small village in Agrigento, Grisafi has lived in Palermo for nearly two decades, though she frequently returns to her hometown. Her career, however, has taken her far beyond Sicily, with recognition across the globe. She has performed in prestigious venues across Europe and the United States, gaining acclaim for both her technical mastery and emotional depth. Despite her international success, she remains deeply connected to her Sicilian roots, which continue to inspire her compositions and performances.

In the United States, she previously received two Global Music Awards in Los Angeles for Sicilitudine and Notturno Soledad, the Akademia Music Award for her piece Pace, and the title of Most Distinguished Musician at the Ibla Grand Prize International Competition in New York. Sicilitudine was also chosen as the soundtrack for the short film All of a Sudden by Michele Difonzo and Francesco Cavallo.

Her recent achievements include being a semifinalist at the International Songwriting Competition in Nashville, winning the Gold Prize in Original Composition and the Award for Extraordinary Creativity at the Carl Reinecke International Music Competition in London, securing Third Prize at Classical Music Stars in Gdańsk (Poland), and taking First Prize in the Professional-Composition category at the 5th Fanny Mendelssohn International Competition. In August, she was honored by the Municipality of Caltabellotta for her international successes. Since 2025, she has also been a member of the Italian Society of Contemporary Music (SIMC), founded by Alfredo Casella.

Grisafi trained at the Conservatorio A. Scarlatti in Palermo, earning top honors in Piano (Levels I and II) under Professor Enza Vernuccio, as well as a Diploma in Composition under Maestro Marco Betta. She further enriched her artistic formation through studies in Ottoman-Turkish Sufi music with Maestro Stèfane Gallet and participated in piano masterclasses with renowned artists including Michele Marvulli, Giuseppe Merli, Luminita Rotaru Costantinovici, Emanuele Torquati, and Roberto Plano, experiences that broadened her musical horizons and refined her interpretative sensitivity.

Her concert career has taken her across Italy and abroad (Spain, France, the United States), where she continues to captivate audiences and critics alike. Her compositions are published by Pizzicato Verlag Helvetia and have been performed by leading institutions including the Teatro Massimo Foundation of Palermo, Teatro Politeama Garibaldi of Palermo, and the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra Foundation.
