Julian Quander Interview with Muzique Magazine

How did you come by your stage/brand name?

My Grandmother named me Julian. The whole family wanted to name me Joshua, but she faults hard and made sure my name was Julian. I think the family that side of the family had a falling out. haha

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I had a love for music as a child. My earliest memory was in 3rd grade. Mr. Smith, my music teacher at Stonegate Elementary School asked the entire class if any of us would like to audition for the Montgomery County Children’s Choir.

Nobody raised their hand. Everyone was afraid, but my little 7-year-old butt raised his hand and decided to take an audition. I believe this may have been the first audition in my life. He took me to the piano and we did some basic scales and sang some simple songs. He told me I passed and I was in the choir. That’s sort of when the music bug started.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

I would say my style is a mixture between Michael Jackson/Usher/Justin Timberlake and Donny Hathaway. Their tones have a lot of inspiration within the way I sing. But I do think there’s a part of me that’s completely unknown.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

(MUSIC VIDEO WISE) The concept relates to my real-life experience. I live in Xiamen, China, and I started my own record label. I’ve been living in China since 2010. I came here on a signed contract to be lead singer in a 5 Star Hotel Band. Asia is beautiful, and when I came to China. I was on a real adventure. New scene, new vibes, and totally new energy.

Coming from the USA to China was a total change. I had to learn the language and embrace the culture. So this latest project called “Never Let The Love Stop” kind of focuses on the Asian Experience. Many people don’t know anything about this side of the world, and I hope to be that bridge. Asia is awesome. I encourage people to be international. See the world. Live life and get your butt out of bed and travel.

(Music Wise) The song topic is about a guy telling his mom about his new found love, and I’ve been in that situation. Where I told my mom about a girl I like.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

My greatest challenges have always been dealing with the man in the mirror(myself). For a long time, I was lost. I knew what I wanted, but lacked full-on focus. I changed a lot over the years and began to realize that I’m the one stopping me from succeeding and not others. I believe my greatest attribute is my sense of care. I work hard, and I figured out a way to really tap into that energy.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

Yes, I’m the best. I have to believe this if I’m going to get anywhere with this music stuff, but at the same time, there is always room for improvement. And I can sometimes be my worst critic.

What are your plans for the near future?

We gonna push this single “Never Let The Love Stop” featuring Champagne Duane until the wheels fall off. I have never had a single get this much love before and I’m so freaking excited. I see the Grammy in my future baby!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout-outs?

I would like to thank my parents and family for always being there for me. I would like to thank my team for pushing me to the limit. I would like to thank my sugar sweet baby whose name I can’t mention because she wants to be out of the limelight haha.

I would like to thank all my Vocal instructors who helped me craft my skills, and I would also like to thank everyone who told me “no”. Without their “No”, I wouldn’t “Know”. Do you know? haha

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?

This industry isn’t for the weak harder. I would suggest y’all stay active as possible. Keep good company around you. Stay clean, hungry, and imaginative. If you really want it. Go for it.
