notKhoi Interview with Muzique Magazine

How did you come by your stage name?

My rap name “notKhoi” comes from my first name “Khoi”. I thought it would be funny to call myself notKhoi.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I’ve been playing music since I was a little kid. I first picked up a guitar when I was 4 years old. As I got older, I began to get more inspired by hip-hop music and culture. I then started producing beats for rappers to rap on, but I would constantly find myself freestyling on my own beats. I then decided to pursue being a rapper after my friends told me I offered a unique sound that they’ve never heard from anyone else before.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

I think my biggest inspirations come from artists outside of hip-hop. I try and take on classical techniques and blend them into modern music in order to make my own style. I listened to a lot of Yo-Yo Ma growing up. I think the reason that my music sounds so unique is that I mix in other genres and really experiment with my music.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

My latest song “Thugger Thugger” was my first trap song. It was all a freestyle that I recorded in one take. The lyrics came into my head after a long night out and everything came naturally. I just spoke whatever came into my mind.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

I think the greatest challenge is the fact that I’m doing everything independently. Achieving success without a label is difficult, but I pride myself on that. I’ve always been a “do everything myself” kind of person and my music career is no different. I do my own marketing, producing, and sound engineering. Juggling everything at once can be tough, but I credit my work ethic to growing up poor as a kid. My family used to struggle and I had to do a lot of things to make ends meet.

What are your plans for the near future?

I plan to release my debut EP later this summer. I want it to be a mix of multiple genres to create a listening experience that is totally different than the music everyone else is releasing right now.
