Exclusive Interview with Canadian Artist “Carsen Joy Dodd”

How did you come by your stage name?

I decided to stick with the name I was born with, I love it, so I didn’t see any reason for changing it.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I started singing when I was 4, going to lessons, and I loved it. It was always my favorite day of the week. I’ve always just been drawn to music and I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in it but I used to be very shy growing up, and just didn’t have the courage to get out there.

Fast forward to now, and it’s not just a dream, it’s becoming a reality and I would never be where I am today without some key people. I joined TikTok in March, and come October I’m signing an artist recording contract, it was kind of surreal to me, still is. This is only the beginning and I’m excited to see what comes next.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

It sort of just happened, Brian Harley from PNS Global Music reached out to me while I was on a TikTok live and wanted to sign me. And that’s when this all began, we saw a dream and ran with it to create my first two singles “Goodbye to Goodbyes” and “Cinderella.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

I’m going to be completely transparent here. I’d say my greatest challenges would be believing in myself, which is silly I know, but because I grew up being so shy I never really put myself out there, and whenever someone would give me a compliment.

I would just think they were being nice, and not necessarily telling the truth. It wasn’t till recently when I actually fully started to believe in myself, and even now I still have moments where I struggle with it, but I keep pushing.

As for my greatest attribute when it comes to my work ethic, I’m a perfectionist, which I guess can also be a weakness as well. A blessing but a curse at the same time but, when I am passionate about a project, I put everything I have into it and I will run with it.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

Haha, no. Can we ever truly be the best at anything? I am constantly learning new things and continually growing as an artist, as well as in my personal life. But I would have to say no to this question, yes I am the best I can be at this moment but there is always room to better yourself.

What are your plans for the near future?

My plans are to ride this wave and enjoy it. Being as these are my first two singles that I have released, I am still in the early stages of this journey. It’s hard to say right now with COVID, what will come next but in the meantime, I will be working on some new music.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?

There are so many people I would like to thank, but I’ll try to keep it as short as I can! First being my grandparents, and my parents for always believing in me. They saw in me what I never truly believed until now (also with helping me pay for lessons as I was growing up lol).

All the rest of my family, my friends, and my bestie, Amy, for all the support and love given, and for just sticking by my side when I’ve been at my lowest. Huge shout out to Darcy Deutsch with Darcy D Music Group @darcydmusicgroup, I would not be where I am and my voice would not be what it is today, without him.

I’d also like to extend a shoutout to Brian at PNS Global Music @pnsglobalmusic, for giving me this opportunity, to get my voice out there and believing I had what it takes.

And lastly, everyone else behind the scenes who helped make these two singles possible, Denean Dale @deneandale for hair and makeup and Sarah Jane @sarah_janepics for the photos for the cover art & Andrew at Flash Recording @flashrecording in Vancouver. I can’t thank you all enough!

What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?

Never, never give up. Seriously, I know it sounds cliche… but I would not be where I am today if I gave up. Keep going, even when it seems too hard or like you can’t do it, you can! Trust in yourself, manifest that Sh*t lol.
