EXCLUSIVE: Attorney for Laura Owens Speaks Out Following Her Indictment in Clayton Echard Case

David Gingras Speaks Out on Laura Owens Indictment: “I’ve Never Seen Anything Like This”

Following the indictment of Laura Owens in connection with the highly publicized paternity case against former Bachelorstar Clayton Echard, Arizona attorney David Gingras — who previously represented Owens in the civil matter — has confirmed to Muzique Magazine he will not be involved in her criminal defense.

“I don’t do criminal defense work, so I will not be representing her in the criminal case,” Gingras explained in a direct message. “In fact, because the charges relate to things that happened in the paternity case where I represented Laura, I am technically arguably a witness. Lawyers are not allowed to represent clients in a case where the lawyer may also be called as a witness.”

Gingras emphasized that while no one has suggested he would be called to testify, it remains a possibility — particularly if Owens’ criminal case goes to trial.

He also expressed surprise at the severity of the prosecution, noting, “I’ve been involved in MANY cases where people have committed perjury, and I have never seen anyone charged… so there is something really unusual about Laura’s case.”

Owens has since issued a detailed public statement, calling the charges “the result of coordinated harassment, misinformation, and public pressure,” and denying any wrongdoing. She claims the charges reflect a system swayed by online outrage and asserts that her medical records confirm her pregnancy — a detail she says prosecutors have intentionally omitted.

While Gingras declined to comment on the broader legal or political implications, his remarks underscore the rare and complex nature of the case, which continues to draw widespread public attention.
