Interview with DJ FijiBoi Dlo

How did you come by your stage / brand name?

I came across the name “FIJI BOI (boy) D’Lo” thru my clothing line “PR3SZN” (Pre Season). Everyone that knew me in high school knew that I sold these dope ass hats under the name “Fijiboi” we sold out of all my stock and everyone around the school knew me as “Fijiboi” so I decided to make it my DJ name, because when you think of Fiji you think of the islands and that’s a quality place to be or live at. This represents me because Fijiboi is not just a name its a lifestyle of being your “quality” you at all times. I’m being my quality me by chasing my dreams of being a successful professional DJ.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

I had a love for it ever since I was younger. Shout out to all the original Xbox lovers. If you know you know they had a game called Jet set radio future and it featured a guy name DJ professor K. Now my younger self did not add the context clues of seeing his profession as a DJ in his name. So years later listening to music like Three 6 mafia members like Dj Paul and Juicy J dj’d and mentioned it all the time so I finally knew what I wanted to do.

I wanted to be this elusive DJ everyone knew. So in middle school, I began to practice and assemble my own mixtape lines and make money selling them in school. Shout out to everyone that went to Lewis Frasier middle. Anyways when I got to high school I was hesitant to DJ because my music taste was drastically different from the music being released at the time and what people wanted to hear. I know as a DJ you have to cater to the crowd but also introduce them to songs they never thought they wanted to hear. In high school, I listened to nothing bur underground rap music so I knew my taste of music had a specific niche so decided to help others make music by recording them and make some beats.

Later on, in my senior year, I started my clothing brand and went hard at that. That brings me to college I decided to bring back my DJ career in my sophomore year. It so funny how it started. I DJ’d for my fashion society club for all the models at Johnson & wales university. This lead to getting an offer to DJ a house party and that was my big break at the time. I went crazy everyone at the house party complimented me saying how good of a DJ I was, this was a big encouragement because this was my first event I did and it was a symbol to me to keep going cause this is something I have true talent and love for.

Since then I kept working at underground house parties till I got the attention of some club promoters. Big shoutout to them because without them I would not be where I was at in the charlotte club scene. Ever since then I DJ’d at multiple clubs in Charlotte, Fayetville, Savannah and even Dj’d for some platinum and gold artist featuring the likes of Da Baby, Stunna 4 Vegas, Mulatto & Euro Gotit. All I can say is with the grace of God’s hard work and dedication I manifested this all to happen. The best advice I will give is to write down your goals and just follow your instincts, the hard work will not be for anything I promise.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

Major inspirations from the music I listened to at the time. Artists like Asap Rocky, Playboi Carti, Kanye, Pharell, & Lil B. These guys gave me my sense of music style that was different from the rest of the mainstream music that was out at the time and as well as style in how I dress and carried myself. Other than that I get my style from anime shows as well, my favorite growing up being Naruto, Dragon ball z & Bleach.

On your upcoming project, how did you come up with the concept?

Well working with my bro J Reid it was just a blessing how the pieces came together. We met at one of my parties I was doing at and I gave him a couple of my beats for free, I ain’t think nothing of it cause I just wanted to get my sound and style out there. His style shocked me I knew he could rap and sing but he had chemistry with this actual song man I was blown away.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

My greatest challenge is to stop thinking of what others think of me. Before doing I was pretty hip to hearing new music and deciphering what would blow up next and who would be the next big star. Now that I DJ my ear has changed in the fact that I listen for even more variables of what should blow up. I know not to think about what sounds good to just me but to everyone now. At times this hinders me to really be fluent with my style and getting new music in rotation.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

I’m going to get on my cocky sh*t for a second. I have a feeling in my heart I’m the best at what I do I know it and can feel it. I know I can be better so I don’t want to always project that on others I want others to figure it out for themselves but at the end of the day no one’s opinion of me will stop what I’m doing. Years from now my music will be a time capsule for the next-gen and influence them in some way.

What are your plans for the near future?

My plans as of now during this COVID Season are to just allocate all my money to invest in myself not just getting new clothes but actually getting new equipment, a nice house, a new car, & peace of mind. This is going to set me apart from others. If you arent willing to go broke putting money into your passion its not really your passion. I’ll keep djing until I’m in the coffin and I mean literally I will be buried with my DJ board.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?

I have a long list but I probably will still leave out some names because I have bad short term memory. Anyways I have to thank my family, Mom, Dad, Grandma, all my cousins, nieces, uncles, and aunties. The first rap group I worked with, Tmoe, Jair, Nick, DJ, Charles, Terell they know wassup man they believed in me. Of course the Fijiboyz of 912 they know who they are, them boys since band days.

All my friends I met in college, Jayde, & Yalexis, The whole TBM crew. Shout out my school Johnson & Wales University of Charlotte as well. All the club promoters that gave me a chance, Big shoutout to Kash & Vito they gave me my first event. Shout out Akanni for putting me on game on how to move as a CEO boss. My dawg Chef Tyler & my barber Timeless cuts, they are my OG’s they treat me as a lil bro and keep me from making dumb mistakes. My dawg Kevin he is my white twin no cap.
