Gullykvng talks about his craft, style and more
How did you come by your stage name?
Ha! Well, it took 6 years for me to come up with the name Gullykvng’. I was going by the name Malik Franzoni, Nico Holiday, Teddy and Malik Noir’. I always liked the word Gully because one of my favorite reggae artists Mavado is known for being on the gully side. When you translate the name Malik it means King so I had to have this in my stage name. I changed the spelling from King to Kvng because of how the group A$ap Mob spelled words.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I’ve been writing music since I was 13. It wasn’t until I went through heartbreak when I was 18 that I discovered my love for Jazz, House, R&B, and Hip-Hop. I realized I wanted to pursue a career in music when I realized how much money my dad made from it.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
I would have to say I am very bohemian, alternative and peculiar. So I would say maybe Azealia Banks has played a big part in my style.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
So I am very excited to release my official EP. The concept of this project came from this Korean artist park hey Jin. I came across this record by her “I DON’T CARE” and it inspired me to record music that I wanted to. Not so much what other people would expect me to rap about. I’m super happy about the project and my first single “Entrance” is coming out July 25 via Soundcloud, Apple Music, Spotify, etc. But for now, I am still promoting my other single “Malik’s Room”.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
One of my greatest challenges is finishing a complete project. As a Gemini, our minds are racing a mile a minute I can’t help it. But on the other side of that, I can say I’m very determined. If I want it I will work hard to get it to trust me.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Absolutely! I say this because I am very authentic when it comes down to my music. I pride myself on having Individuality. I am the only person that really knows thyself, so of course, I am the best at it.
What are your plans for the near future?
Graduating with my English degree in June/July 2021, Moving out of my grandmother’s house, and being happy with my music career.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
I would like to thank god first because he has gotten through so much. My mom, SoftxShug for helping me jump start my career. Queen Green for just inspiring me to express myself more and Kim Audio for editing and mixing my songs.
How can fans find you?
You can find me on Instagram @GULLYKVNG & @SAINT.BEAUOLGY. Soundcloud @GULLYKVNG Twitter @GULLYKVNG.
What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?
Express yourself don’t repress yourself and learn how to truly embody individuality.
