SelfMadeMizzy Interview with Muzique Magazine

How did you come by your stage name?

I used to be called “ Omizzy” which came from middle school my friends used to call me that name. My government name is Omar and back then In the DMV area there was a popular rapper by the name of shy glizzy that everyone loved my beard was starting to look like his and that’s when people in school would combine my name Omar and glizzy and they created omizzy.

I then shorted it to just mizzy and once I started creating my social media handles I wanted all of them to have the same handle I then found out that mizzy and omizzy was already in use, therefore, I added the Selfmade in the front and not one social media had the name so it was available for me to use that handle for all social media I, later on, started to do music and just used my handle name as my artist name.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

At first, I didn’t want to do music I wanted to manage my friend who wanted to be a rapper I would take him to his studio sessions and book him music videos but once I saw him in the studio and saw him performing music videos I wanted to try it my self and the very first time I spoke into the mic I fell in love with making music I then started booking my own sessions and videos and just kept falling more in love every session.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

As far as my fashion I definitely would say I follow the footsteps of my area back home in the DMV area we wear a lot of new balances and Nike Foamposites and to be honest, we are just the most fly people on earth even down to our homeless. In the city, you can find homeless people with Foamposites and some clean new Balcanes.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

I am in the finishing touches of my mixtape “Brown n Proud” and I came up with the concept once I realized the beat selection that I was getting attached to I found myself creating a lot of Spanish / trap samples and putting my own twist into them, for example, I have an Aventura which is a bachata band I sampled their song into a trap beat and just ended up turning it into a trap song. I am obviously Latino and very proud of my roots my ancestry and where my people come from and have to deal with so the concept is very patriotic to my people and culture and just proud to be brown I guess.
