TERAH LYNN talks about her sense of style, current project, and much more
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
Music has always soothed me. Even as a little girl, I would listen to the stories told in songs and feel understood. My grandma, my mom, and my sister all sing beautifully and would sing in church. I never considered it or had tried to sing until my late teen years. I remember walking up the stairs singing along to something and my little brother was behind me and said “Wow, that sounded beautiful” and it confused me but started me down the thought process of “maybe I’m a singer too?” I don’t think I’ve ever told him that though. Thanks, David!
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
My sense of style has always been a little odd. I like to be comfortable so whatever elicits that feeling for me, I will wear. A lot of people think that I wear black because Johnny Cash is my favorite singer, but really, It just makes me feel comfortable. I am synthetic and color affects my emotions to an extreme, so that may be why. But I have no problem getting all dolled up for an event or photoshoot. I just like what I like at the moment and that’s what I’m going to wear.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
I was on the phone with someone that I loved and they were having a really hard time. So when we got off the phone, I prayed and asked God to give me a song for them that would help them and make them feel better. Five minutes later the song was done.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
One of my greatest challenges is that I am a cliche, brooding, moody artist. I feel everything to the extreme and so when I am doing something and the feeling isn’t there, it’s easy for me to lose motivation. But when I’m in, I’m all in. I come from the Appalachian Mountains, where people work hard and my family instilled in me a drive and resilience that allows me to accomplish what I set out to do no matter what or how long it takes.
What are your plans for the near future?
My plan is and has always been to make a living doing music. It brings me peace and is what I feel God created me to do. I don’t need extravagant wealth, I just want enough to live comfortably.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Oh man, so many people! First and foremost, my mom and grandma for always believing in me, having grace for my brooding, and for always praying over my life. My sister who constantly hypes me up! Billy Dorsey, my producer, and big brother, for taking me under his wing and giving so much towards my dream and for always speaking life. His amazing team. My fans!!!
And always most importantly God, without whom I would be nothing, have nothing, and be going nowhere. It’s His life in me that sustains me and He is so, so faithful.
