Behind The Scenes
MDW breaking New Freestyle artists and the Legends to FM radio
For the past two decades, DJ MDW has cemented his reputation as an elite Producer/DJ/Remixer, one of few on the planet capable of taking audiences worldwide on a musical sonic journey through Freestyle Classics (Nu School / Old School), house, afrobeat, Tech Tribal, Progressive and dance classics. Today, many DJ’s who have been MDW idols have become peers, and his fans often become his friends, even if just through the shared experience of music.
Countless relationships were commenced to the tracks he has created time and time again. His eloquence extends well beyond the music he plays—MDW’s spontaneous use of dirty freestyle beats, speaks to the fact that he’s been a well-respected dance producer artist for over two decades, not to mention that he’s a label owner of Flava Music Records (Home of Freestyle) and Soul Flava Recordings (Home of Soul House).
His passion has always been a radio and being connected to his fans on a global level. His power has become his on-air personality and ability to mix any genres flawlessly. MDW was a successful an on-air personality/DJ on Curacao’s Rhumba 94.5FM, Dutch Caribbean island, Pulse 87FM and currently is on every Mondays on Rhythm 105.9fm in Sacramento California with his 5’O Clock Traffic Freestyle Jam and every Friday on La Llama 104.5fm HD2 with his 5’O Clock Freestyle Rush Mix in Port St Lucie, FL. This is why the fans call him “ El Loco, El Boriqua “.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I discovered the love for music as a teenager. DJing in east Harlem doing block parties and school dances. I knew I wanted to pursue this as a career because it was my passion and they say if you love what you do then you will never work a day in your life.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
My style comes from my being my authentic self. When people ask me who is MDW, I always answer by saying ” MDW is an experience.
On your upcoming project, how did you come up with the concept?
My following kept growing on social media and I wanted to take my vision for the freestyle music community and take it to the FM radio stations to reach a larger audience.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
One of my greatest challenges is always recreating myself and staying relevant in a world that is constantly changing. I live, breathe music and its part of who I am. I am dedicated to my craft and stay consistent because the words ” I quit ” does not exist in my vocabulary
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
I am the World’s greatest DJ MDW! The only competition I have is with myself, this is why they call me ” The Energy Blaster “
What are your plans for the near future?
