Pianist, Producer and Entrepreneur Zach Evans Talks About The Love for His Craft, Upcoming Collaborations and More
Zach Evans is an influencer, specializing in playing and teaching piano online. He’s grown his following to an impressive 10,000,000 YouTube views and 100,000 Instagram Followers. He’s written an Amazon Bestselling book and has recently given a TEDx Talk. His business, Piano University, has made over $1,000,000 in revenue.
Zach grew up in Milwaukee Wisconsin. His Dad was a gym teacher and his Mom a stay at home mom. He took piano lessons as a kid, but quit early on, and didn’t pick piano back up until college. Zach and graduated in 2009 from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh with a music degree. He now lives in Los Angeles, where he continues to build his business and music career.
How did you come by your brand name?
Not a lot of people know this, but my real name is Zach Schimenz. But my first piano teacher was my Grandpa, Dave Evans. He was and still is, the biggest influence on my music today. I owe him so much. And so I wanted to honor him with the Zach Evans name.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I started really late. I didn’t really fall in love with music until college. During my freshman year, I had a lot of trouble making friends – I was lonely. So I started playing the piano for hours and hours every night. It was an escape for me.
It’s kinda funny, I was literally learning off of YouTube at the time. I would just bring my laptop and stare at the screen, and try to see what notes they were playing, and I’d copy them. After doing this enough, you start to figure out what patterns and chords work really well, and you can start developing your own style. It wasn’t until two years later that I really switched my major to music and decided to go for it 100%.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
The biggest challenge for me was having to learn everything myself. But it’s a challenge I like. I never had a label. I do everything, the writing, the producing, the editing, the marketing – and everything has a learning curve.
Then when I started the Become a Piano Superhuman course, that was a whole new can of worms, figuring out web design, digital marketing, and everything that goes into creating an online piano course. But there’s so much I learned from creating the course that also helped me promote my music.
Honestly, I got lucky to be born into a family who taught me work ethic. We didn’t have a lot of money but my dad made sure to instill hard work into our bones. And honestly, that’s worth more than any amount of money he could give to me.
What are your plans for the near future?
I’m working on a TON of collaborations at the moment. I’ve done a few in the past, but a lot of my stuff is solo work. They’re definitely a lot easier to get done when you don’t have to rely on anyone but yourself, but collaborations are fun, and I’m looking forward to getting into more of them. Plus you get the benefit of the crossover with your fans and their fans.
