Sunny Bleau Interview with Muzique Magazine
Sunny Bleau Interview with Muzique Magazine
Who is Sunny Bleau?
“Sunny” was my nickname growing up. People always described me as a warm, ray of sunshine, and the name stuck. “Bleau” (which is pronounced “Blue”) is a fun, playful, and slightly suggestive spelling that describes the Pop-Blues music we write and perform. I look at life through rose-colored glasses. I imagine a life without regret, depression, fear, and hate. I want everyone to feel included in a positive, warm and playful environment when they come to see Sunny Bleau and the Moons perform live and when they listen to our music!
When did you discover your love for music and what made you want to pursue a career in the industry?
My dad gave me a guitar for my sixteenth birthday, and I’ve been writing songs ever since. I started Underdog Music and Publishing with my songwriting partner, Nicholas Cocco (who is also my producer and guitar player for my band, Sunny Bleau and The Moons). Nic and I were writing and publishing original music, and I was singing the demos. But the feedback we kept getting from many of the Producers and Songwriters in the industry was that I should release the songs. I’m a single mom with 4 kids, and I laughed at the idea of going from being a stay-at-home mom on the brink of 40 to being a brand! But when Covid happened, as awful as it has been, it really helped me realize how precious and short our time on Earth is. I knew if I was going to take a chance on myself, the time was now. Nic assembled The Moons (Drummer, Paul Kastick and Bassist, Alex Karasinski) and we got right to work on the first album.
What kind of audience do you write and perform for?
I have this overly optimistic side where I want everyone to like my music, but that isn’t reality. Some people will hear it, regardless of their age and experiences and they will love it and others won’t. And that’s OK! But I think audiences who appreciate my music are people who have made mistakes, felt regret, lived, loved, lost… people who want to hear something real about pain and love and sex and overcoming obstacles. People want real, but at the same time, they want to escape from the burdens of daily life. Creating musical arrangements that complement the storytelling or help balance it out are really important, and Nic does a great job fusing the two.
What can listeners expect from the first Sunny Bleau and the Moons Album?
The first Sunny Bleau and the Moons album is called “Blush” and it will come out in October 2021. We currently have four singles out (He’s my Peach, King of Hearts, Denver, and Winning), and we have two more singles coming in August and September. All six of these single releases plus five additional songs will be on the Blush album.
What are some of the greatest obstacles and strengths when working with a band?
I think it’s like this for any career you have. In this case, when you’re in a position where you are working with a Producer and bandmates, it’s really important to respect and honor the specific skills that each member brings to a project. My strength is as a lyricist and storyteller, and The Moons count on me to deliver a good story. Likewise, I trust Nic, Paul, and Alex to create amazing arrangements that help me to tell the stories. And sometimes we work with other songwriters and bounce ideas off one another. It’s very difficult to work in a vacuum, and you have to have a community of writers and musicians you trust.
What are some of your plans for the near future?
The Moons and I have three more music videos coming out between now and October. We are working with an amazing local director who directed the King of Hearts music video which is already on my Vemo channel and YouTube, and we have one for Denver, Winning, and the last two singles on the way! There is also a He’s my Peach music video on YouTube. Sunny Bleau and the Moons have also been invited to Festivals all around the country, so we will have more tour dates being added to the schedule.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Ha! That’s an interesting question. Am I the best singer-songwriter, entertainer… no! But on the other hand, nobody else is Sunny Bleau. I am the only Sunny Bleau, and only I get to be her. I can’t try to be anyone else. I have to be true to myself. I believe we are all on this earth for a reason, so whatever you believe you were put on the earth to do, do it 100%, because nobody can do it like YOU do it! That’s what I believe I’m doing.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank for helping you get where you are?
I wouldn’t be here without the love and support of my parents and my kids. I am grateful to Nic, Paul, and Alex and their dedication to Sunny Bleau and the Moons. I’m grateful to Muzique Magazine for doing this story and to the kind people who have interviewed me on the radio so far. Everyone has been very professional and kind. I’m grateful to all the people who have done work behind the scenes to help promote my brand. I’m thankful to the fans who spend their hard-earned money on our music. And I’m thankful to God who gave me this voice and “sunny” personality to share with others.
How can fans find out more about you?
People can find out more about Sunny Bleau and the Moons at www.SunnyBleau.com. That’s where they can find tour information and sign up for the newsletter. I’m also on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook and I have a Vevo channel and I’m on YouTube. And of course, they can get our music on all major music streaming platforms like iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, and Deezer.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
You have to be YOU. Don’t try to be like anyone else. Find what makes you unique as an artist and focus on it. Find a community that supports you as an artist. Don’t be afraid to learn from others. Don’t act like you know it all, because you don’t! And above all… be nice to everybody on your way up, because you’ll meet them all again on your way down!
