Randy MC Exclusive Interview with Muzique Magazine
How did you come by your stage name?
Randy is my legal name. MC are the initials Martono-Chai.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I discovered I loved music when I first started out playing piano, imitating my mother, plunking out gibberish to some of her hymnal music even though I didn’t know how to read music. She let me take piano lessons and it stuck with me for life.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
My musical role models include Oscar Peterson, Beyonce, Jacob Collier, Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Tori Kelly, Ariana Grande, Sam Tsui, Andre Previn.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
I wanted some organic and unique that would set me apart from all the fancy Beverly Hills studios. I wanted to dig deep into the rich heritage of Black and American music borne out of the South, particularly New Orleans; at least a third of my album and half my EP has NOLA vibes and music to some capacity.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
I guess it’s finding out what I need to do next to get along with sharing my music with the world. that’s where you come in!
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Yes. Pianist-singer, keytarist, accompanist to all’s styles and rep, and phenomenal sightreading skills. Versatile singer and conservatory-trained, I’ve made it my mission to put a smile on people’s faces through art.
What are your plans for the near future?
Release a few more singles, then an EP, then an album!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
My friends, family, role models, and fans.
