Get To Know Pop Singer and Songwriter “Katelyn Seary”
Katelyn Seary is a next-generation pop singer/songwriter whose passion was sparked by the legendary House of Mouse. A self-described “Disney baby” who witnessed the career evolutions of Disney-bred superstars like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Demi Lovato, Seary found that watching their concerts on YouTube brought her happiness like no other.
That feeling ultimately led her to pursue a musical career of her own, and despite being homeschooled, she found ways to perform by enrolling in music school and singing in showcases.
It’s fitting that her first performance in front of an audience—at just six years old—was a cover of Cyrus’ hit, “The Climb,” and the standing ovation she received afterward solidified her passion to one day see her name in lights.
While still practicing music, Seary parlayed her homeschooling into early high school graduation and a two-year head-start on college, all in the name of making time to write and sing her own material. As she says, “being homeschooled gave me the flexibility of making my own schedule at my own pace.”
Over the years, she has learned to let the music come to her how it may, abandoning formality in favor of midnight inspiration. “Sometimes I will actually wake up from a deep sleep and have a melody pop into my head,” she says of her creative process. “I would then run out of bed and sing and record the melody, so I don’t forget it.”
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I have always loved to write and tell stories through my writing. I have also always wanted to be a singer/songwriter ever since I can remember. I first fell in love with ballroom dancing as I loved watching the ballroom dancers tell a story through dance.
I started ballroom dancing and competing when I was 11 and loved it. There was always something about music that felt so magical to me. No feeling could ever beat the way how I feel when listening to my favorite song or watching my favorite artists singing on YouTube during their concerts.
I loved seeing how happy the audience would get during a Taylor Swift and/or a Selena Gomez concert. Seeing people in the audience and watching their faces light up and hearing everyone singing together to all their favorite songs is incredible.
It would be a dream come true to make people happy through my music and to see people singing and dancing to my songs. Especially during times like this when we need to reach out and make people happy and forget about what is going on around them right now.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
On my current project that was just released, I Don’t Know How You Do What You Do”, it was my goal to write a happy and upbeat song that will get people up and dancing or even blasting it in the car with their windows down.
The storyline for the song is about being in what seems to be a “perfect” relationship. The other person in the relationship always says and does the right thing but it is real? This song explores this new and exciting relationship with a little bit of skepticism as of never feeling this way for another person before.
My upcoming project “Over Here”, being released Friday, February 19, 2021, is about being on the brink of the end of a relationship. However, both people in the relationship are not ready to give up and want to work things out.
“Over Here” reflects on the not so good times in the relationship and the importance of having communication in a relationship. “Over Here”, in a way, is like part 2 to the story of “I Don’t Know How You Do What You Do” after all the excitement of a new relationship.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
I would say one of my greatest challenges for my music is that I was homeschooled and not knowing a lot of people. Although homeschooling gave me the ability to graduate two years early from high school and more time to write songs, it’s hard to get my name and songs out to new people.
My greatest attribute when it comes to my work ethic is the fact that it doesn’t feel like work. I’ve never had such a passion for anything in my life before songwriting.
Singing and songwriting is what makes me the happiest and encourages me to keep writing every day. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else but being a singer/songwriter. I also love performing and can’t wait to perform my songs in front of people.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Absolutely not. For me, I use songwriting as an outlet to express myself. Songwriting really helps me get to the bottom of why I feel a certain way, or to let myself feel free by letting go of emotions and thoughts that have been weighing on me.
With that said, it’s more rewarding for me to hopefully use my songs as a way to connect with other people. It’s my hope that if even one of my songs can help make somebody’s day better or feel understood that is when songwriting for me becomes rewarding.
What are your plans for the near future?
It has always been a dream of mine to go on tour. I would love in the near future to open up for an artist on tour and keep getting my name out there. In the meantime, I am working on a lot of new song ideas and doing whatever I can to get my songs out there for more people to hear.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Yes of course! The biggest person I would like to thank is my Mom, who is one of my besties and probably one of my biggest fans. I feel so blessed and fortunate how supportive my parents are, especially my mom.
She has encouraged me to never give up on my dreams, even if they are hard to achieve. My dad taught me that we make our own destiny and if I have a dream, I have to work for it.
I would also love to say thank you to my brother Michael. He is my best friend and lights up my day. He encourages me to be a better person every day and I hope I make him proud to be his sister.
