Interview with Hot Up and Coming Producer NaCl
How did you come by your stage name?
NaCl – is the chemical formula for Salt, my surname is Salter. It’s that straightforward. I had a few other names over the years, but they are too embarrassing to mention!
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I’ve always loved music. There is a picture of me when I was about 2 or 3 up at our record player, spinning some old tunes. Over the years I dabbled at producing my own tracks and DJ-ing, but for one reason or another, it never came to much. A few years back I got the urge to start writing my songs again, but this time I wanted to make a success of it. I’ve always had a passion for dance music and felt I had something to offer.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
I wish there was an easy answer to this one! I love the funk, disco and soul music of the 1970s. I’ve also been a big fan of the electronic music of the early 1980s and then later on house music in all its different varieties…… and if that wasn’t enough, I still have a big passion for old skool hip-hop.
So my style often crosses the genre divide and I’d like to think that every track I release has just a slightly different feel, and often all the aforementioned influences can be heard at – not all at once – that could sound a bit weird!
On your upcoming project, how did you come up with the concept?
Animal is the latest release. It’s an 80’s inspired dance track. I’m really happy with the way it’s turned out. I started working with other artists this year and this is my first official collaboration. I put an advert out looking for a vocalist for this track that I originally had an instrumental, but felt it need something else.
During the audition process, found the talented Christine Todd from Boise, Idaho. I hope to continue working with her in the future. Great voice, great versatility! Other future projects include collaborations with other vocalists, instrumentalists, and other producers…. good times ahead!
