Interview with London Based International DJ Paula Frost

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

Hey Muzique Magazine! Great question and thank you for having me. I am a DJ and have been DJing for four years. In that time, I’ve played a world tour across 14 countries and broadcast on radio in the UK. My show is called Way Out Radio (wayoutradio.com Every Thursday 3-5pm on Kane FM).

I’ve had an interesting journey because I started out playing the drums for rock bands. Being in a band is crazy difficult and as a drummer, people aren’t often open to letting you write songs. So, I needed to start a project where I could have more creative freedom and my friends encouraged me to DJ.

I got a radio show on Kane FM and started looking for gigs. An agent called me and offered me a deal helping me to get gigs. From there I went on to play gigs all over the UK and haven’t looked back since! I’m grateful every day for that call.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

DJ style is ESSENTIAL! It’s so competitive in the DJ world and your image is vital. When I play live, I think about every aspect of my presentation and love using projections, visuals, lasers and smoke machines to get the crowd excited. When it comes to my personal style, I’m a bit rock ‘n roll. Usually a leather jacket (vegetarian version!), sequin tops, skinny jeans, a beret, and creepers.

I don’t exactly have a style icon, but I look at stylish people who know how to shock, like the punk clothes of Johnny Rotten and Vivienne Westwood. In the DJ world, I like Steve Aoki’s laid-back image.

Female DJs can sometimes have a reputation for being more concerned about their clothes and hair than their playing (Paris Hilton). But above all, I want to put on a great show that flows and sounds unique.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

As an artist you’re always hungry for the next step, it never subsides. Last year my goals were to see the world and make £10,000 from DJing. I am extremely happy to say I’ve smashed those goals now. My next big thing is to play Camden Roundhouse in May, my biggest venue to date.

There are so many challenges ahead of me as a DJ but as it’s my passion, I’m looking forward to them. Some plans for the future are to release a single, film a music video and play Tomorrowland – that’s ever DJs dream!

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?

I am a good selecter and I can read a room. People really respond to the music I play and the way I speak on the mic. But no, I’m not the best! I’m learning all the time and love watching other DJ’s sets and learning from them.

I don’t see why it has to be a competition. The world is a big place and there’s room for all artists to grow. I enjoy progressing in my own journey and seeing others move forward in their own way. I don’t feel jealousy towards other people’s success, just inspiration. I pour all my energy into moving forward. Don’t look back, you’re not going that way!
