Exclusive Interview with GEM
GEM collected a string of award nominations for her covers album, the2070s which explored reinterpretations of 70s classics. Including Producer of the year/ Electronic Album of the year and Downtempo song of the year (IMAS/ HMAAS)
How did you come by your stage name?
GEM is my real name. Malibu is my new single name.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I grew up around music, it has always been a part of who I am, in the DNA. The transition to producer though is a recent exploration. It was really with my covers record the2070s that I started referring to myself as a producer. Funnily enough, it took someone else to point it out. Now I’m in the studio every day working away and I could not imagine being anywhere else.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
I am inspired by the universe. My concept of Sonic Tonics was born from a real desire to create electro music with wellness benefits. Positive, uplifting vibes that leave you feeling dreamy. I take inspiration from nature, from my favorite chillwave artists, and mix it all together into my dreamy pot of color.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
I wanted my originals to really come from the heart- although I was concerned blending New Age and Electro might be a genre people don’t want to hear… I just had to make the music that was in my soul. It is chilled, blissed-out, retro-electro tunes.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
A big challenge for me was to overcome self-doubt. I still have my days. That is why it’s so important to have a support team you trust.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
I am always aiming to bet the best I can be.
What are your plans for the near future?
Release my next single in September, followed by my whole EP, and continue to add videos to my youtube channel. I am just really connected to creating content in these alternate frequencies that I’ve been making and I am genuinely excited to do more.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
I would like to thank Catharine Wood- a studio owner, engineer based in Los Angeles. She has been incredible support in helping me navigate the waters of the industry.
How can fans find you?

What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?
Keep going, make new connections and continue on the path. Your best song might be one you haven’t written yet.
