Getting to Know the Talented Furet

How did you come by your stage name?

Well, the explanation is simple. My name is Ronald Furet, and that’s where the stage name Furet came from. I decided to use this stage name because it is a short and unusual name that could be easily recognizable.

Also, I think it’s the right name because it’s a very personal musical project, where I carried out all the technical and creative processes of my first two studio albums as a solo artist. I played all the musical instruments such as bass, guitar, drums, keyboards, and singing. In addition, I also did the composition of lyrics and music, musical production and arrangements, recording, mixing, mastering, graphic design, photography, management, and physical and digital distribution.

Therefore, I believe the name Furet best represents the years of work I have personally dedicated to music and to the different disciplines that are required to be able to express in a single concept and independently all my artistic expression in its set. So to me, without a doubt, the correct stage name is Furet.

When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?

In 1993, when I was 12 years old, together with two friends of the same age, I formed my first band called Alerta Roja where I played the keyboard, and I had my public debut for hundreds of people in the main square of the city of Cauquenes, my hometown in Chile. After finishing playing the song that we had performed, I was left with my mouth open watching from the stage to the audience as they applauded us enthusiastically without stopping.

Perhaps when I was little, everything seemed gigantic to me, but thanks to that unforgettable and warm applause, something inside me made me feel that music would be my true path for the rest of my life. From then on I did not stop playing in many places, I formed new bands, and I wrote my first songs. I also learned to play many other instruments in a few years, such as bass, guitar, drums, and singing.

Years later, I decided to study sound and acoustic engineering, a career that was plagued by musical education and in permanent contact with music. For many years I learned step by step and in greater depth each of the stages that a professional musician must live in the recording studio or live performances.

When I moved from Chile to Mexico in 2009, I formed my last band called Tiempo Zero, but after was dissolved in 2012, I didn’t go back on stage for more than a decade.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, I opened my eyes and realized that I definitely can’t live without music. So I decided to go back to the recording studios and look for new venues to be able to deliver my music to everyone who wants to listen to it.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

For me, the sense of style begins when we are born, since we inherit directly from our family and close environment, which we cannot control. Although it would be very good to be able to learn to decide from a young age and choose what we like, in practice, it is unfeasible since all the time someone is always implicitly putting things into our heads.

As more years pass, we normally have more opportunities to absorb new knowledge and cultures, and thus gradually adjust our aesthetic tastes according to our personal needs, the same perceptions that have accompanied us during the different stages of our lives.

I remember that when I was a child in the ’80s, an uncle gave me a small keyboard where I invented my first melodies, and another uncle frequently gave me cassettes of music that I listened to on my stereo over and over again, until the tape would wear out from use, that is, certain music gave me a lot of pleasure listening to it and made me very happy. In addition, giving good music to a child is also giving culture.

That’s how I started looking little by little for new music with aesthetics to my liking to refine my musical tastes at different stages of my life. Some of my main musical influences are Rod Stewart, The Police, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Tomita, The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Doors, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Poison, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Phil Collins, Toto, Rush, Portishead, The Prodigy, The Alan Parsons Project, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Jovanotti, Tim Maia, Santana, Soda Stereo, Virus, Los Enanitos Verdes, La Ley, Los Prisioneros, Los Tres, Café Tacuba, Violeta Parra, Silvio Rodríguez, Eduardo Gatti, Maná, Luis Miguel, Elvis Presley, Pavarotti, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Satie, Paganini, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Paco de Lucía, João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, José Alfredo Jimenez, Alejandro Sanz, Gustavo Cerati, Jorge Drexler, Pedro Aznar, Juanes, Fito Páez, Natalia Lafourcade, Zaz, Jacob Collier etc.

I could continue adding to this diverse list many other musical references that as a whole, generated a particular musical aesthetic in my rational and emotional thinking. When composing my songs those influences will be implemented in one way or another in my new creations.

Dreaming costs nothing, the important thing is to persevere so that dreams come true.

On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?

From a very young age, I began to compose songs, but I never had the time to dedicate myself exclusively to music. Since being a very restless person and eager for knowledge, I always had many commitments and had to fulfill other responsibilities.

Even before the current project, my contributions as a composer were reflected in another project of rock & pop musical band called Tiempo Zero. I did not use my old songs, nor the most recent ones, but together with another friend we created new songs and we released an album in 2011 called “El Juego de las mentiras” (The Game of Lies).

That’s how I accumulated enough of my own or original songs to start a new personal project, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to put all the songs on a single album, or on more.

Years passed, and I was amid the pandemic in the year 2020, philosophizing with a friend, accompanied by a good conversation and some mezcal, and that night I told him: “I will take advantage of the pandemic confinement to fulfill my dream, record my best songs, and publish my music very soon because I feel that music is what I like to enjoy the most in life, and I don’t want the years to go by without the world knowing my art as a singer-songwriter”.

And so it was, when the pandemic began, I took advantage of the time of confinement to record each of the instruments in my home studio, and little by little the project began to take shape.

Finally, I decided to make two albums, one with the songs I had composed in Chile from 1994 to 2006, and another with the songs from my most recent stories in Mexico from 2009 to 2011. So everything made more sense when following a line chronological and geographical.

I called the first album “Simiente”, because it represents my origin as a musician, and on the cover of the album I appear playing the guitar in a campfire, reflecting what I like to do the most, singing with my guitar on the beach by the fire. On the other hand, the second album called “Travesía” is so-called because I crossed a wide geographical area from Chile to Mexico to continue with a new life in Mexico City, where I am currently based and I continue to be tremendously enthusiastic about my musical projects.

In this way, Furet’s musical concept was completely defined, for both albums when an album was published with my songs created in Chile, and the other in Mexico.

What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?

My basic challenge from now on in music is that I hopefully can publish a new music album every year with artistic quality and honesty that represents my expressive and musical feeling in a completely independent way. My greatest long-term musical challenge is that hopefully over the years my music will spread throughout the world and mean something important to many people.

For me each letter, melody, harmony, and rhythm represents my deepest artistic feeling of a specific moment of my life, and that perhaps more than one person feels identified with a story or music in particular. Ethically, I think we should work hard, without skipping so many steps to achieve certain goals because many take shortcuts to achieve goals ahead of time, and the results or consequences of the work are sometimes not good.

The idea is to get to define my style and based on that to be able to achieve the important things, and not to appear for the sake of appearing, or simply to be fashionable superficially. Rather than to work to make history at least with a minimum quality, so that over the years the same people judge and freely choose what music they want to listen to because in this world there are tastes for everything, there’s no doubt about it.

Regarding other challenges in my professional life, I also have great goals in the educational and engineering areas, and I also hope to contribute something to the world over the years, of course, if life allows me because there are many desires, but life is short, and there is not much time to do so many things.

Are you the best at what you do in your opinion? 

There is always someone somewhere in the world who does something in particular much better than me that is why the only thing I can be the best at is comparing with myself, learning from my mistakes and successes, and thus being able to improve day by day. One of the graces of art is that one has the opportunity to capture authenticity and creativity, and if I can become the best interpreter of my art, I think that only in that could I become the best because it is something very personal.

I always do my best in everything I do because I have a lot of passion and energy, and although sometimes things don’t turn out the way you want, I know that if I try again, I can always do better. Unfortunately, life time will not be enough for everything we want to do or perfect, so we have to set a limit and reach a balance to get good results.

For me, the most important thing is that things exist, and to be better or not, as if things were a competition, at least I do not intend to beat someone, because I only compete with myself all the time, and with that It’s enough to beat life.

The important thing is to participate with respect, dignity and a minimum of quality, which is at least enough to be competent, and then time will take care of the rest. Trying to be the best is good, but believing to be the best is not always so good.

What are your plans for the near future?

Plans for the near future are very definite. I will be back playing live in as many places as possible as soon as the pandemic is over. Singing and playing an instrument is what I like to do most in life, and even better if the songs are my own (originals).

That way it makes even more sense to transmit the art that is inside when expressing ideas musically and creatively, real or imaginary, that was originally born in the head of the composer.

If there is someone I would like to thank, first of it is my family and especially my grandfather Reinaldo who supported me unconditionally in my professional career from a very young age. In addition to my closest friends who have always been with me, and to all my friends from different parts of the world who have supported me in moving forward in life.

We all help each other. To my musician friends with whom I grew up, and especially to Arellano and Díaz for having shared stages an impressive number of times. Finally, to the closest music teachers such as Morales, Vergara, Cáceres, Zamora, and Millar, from whom I was able to learn just enough and necessary to continue with my musical career.
