“Common Buzzards” Interview With Muzique Magazine
How did you come by your stage band name?
Originally we were known as The Buzzards but we realized quickly we were sharing that name with about 4 other bands so we decided on a minor rebrand. Honestly, we picked it because it sounded good!
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I don’t think it ever really occurred that it wasn’t an option! Joe is doing an apprenticeship in engineering, Harrison is working on beginning a band management career and I have a degree in music so it’s pretty central to who we are!
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
We’ve got a range of influences, Joe’s a closet metalhead and Harrison is into a lot of modern British indie rock. Personally, I borrow from British post-punk from the 80s and US art-rock like Modest Mouse but the majority of my lyrics are actually inspired by jazz hip hop like MF Doom and Outkast so I’d like to hope that’s our unique selling point!
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
It all came out of a conversation in my day job. A couple of my friends had been having trouble with stalkers that week and four of my colleagues came forward with similar stories and it made me so angry that this was such a common problem to have to deal with I spent two days writing diss lyrics aimed at people that behave like that. All it took was a hook to the surface and I had to get a complete track written about it, I had about four days of intense inspiration about it.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Our greatest attribute to our work ethic? Harrison James. The man is so motivated, it’s frightening. He’ll say “I wanna gig a bit more often” one day and in the evening he’ll have a bunch of dates, it’s insane, we’d never function without him.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
Maybe we are, it’s a hard metric to quantify! Best at burying meta-references in an indie track? Best dad jokes in the business hands down.
What are your plans for the near future?
Well the world is falling apart but we do have more original music to come, there’s studio stuff and we’re still crossing our fingers and prepping to play Thame Town Festival in the new year, we honestly can’t wait, it’s pulling us forward-thinking about playing a big live gig again!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Audiobeach studio for producing the single in its entirety even during a national lockdown with all restrictions in place. Paul Stanworth for being a kingpin in getting us started and supporting us since day 1.
How can fans find you?
Personal Space is available on our Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music and Bandcamp pages along with our 2019 EP “Super Soul” and you can also follow us on Facebook or Instagram @commonbuzzards
What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?
Honestly just network. Friends are indispensable which is why we’ve curated a playlist called Common Buzzards- On the road that compiles all the local talent who have supported us over the last year!
