NKYC Lab is a newer company on the market, but the passion they have for turntablism and technology runs deep. this 2 person operation made up of DJ 108 (JP) and Whitney, created the Shinobi Fader, a portable crossfader that you put on (or near) your IPhone and run the included app to scratch sounds and phrases just like you would on a standard turntable. below is a short Q&A..

Who Is The Creative Team Behind The Shinobi Fader?
NKYC Lab is a team consisting of two members DJ 108 (JP) and Whitney. DJ 108 is the programmer behind SHINOBI DJ app as well as the producer of the SHINOBI FADER M. DJ 108 is the DJ behind most of our promotion videos. Whitney is responsible for the calculations for the platter of SHINOBI DJ app and for all types of administrations and executions. The team has experiences in commercial settings as well as academic research.

What motivated you to create this?
We love DJ scratching and of course the Hip Hop culture behind. We made this portablism equipment to meet the unmet needs of the market, while keeping the quality for professional use. Education and accessibility are always our causes, we believe making equipment like this could support education in graded school curriculum and courses as well as introducing the general public about the fundamental principles of scratching, without a huge investment in mixers and turntables etc.

What were some of the obstacles you faced?
We think the hardest part is to achieve a product quality for professional use, no matter it is about the app or the fader. We have to find alternative solutions for something that is well-established by other great industry leaders. We are extremely glad that we received very positive feedback from professional DJs.

How easy/hard was it to get out to market?
What has the response been thus far? We believe the market is very open-minded and supportive to new products, the market will determine how easy or hard to get out to the market. We received attention from professional DJs as well as people who never tried scratch and wanting to. People compare our products to some industry leading products, which is our honour.

What does the future hold for this product/do you plan on expanding/upgrading this line?
We love and are proud of our products, and we love to imagine everyone having our products in their pockets. They are educational, fun, and full of enjoyment. The market will determine our plans and we take all the comments and feedback seriously to improve our product line.

What is the mission statement for the company?
NKYC Lab aims to create the largest value and impact in the music industry by harnessing the capabilities of exceptionally compact and environmentally friendly devices. – Scratch on the go, wherever the beat takes you. – Anywhere, anytime, everyone.

This is currently for the IPhone/IOS system, but plans are in place to release an Android version.
