INDIE SPOT
LEVI exclusive interview with Muzique Magazine
New Zealand has the potential to be a real hiphop hot spot. A spot where we have a community of hiphop lovers who create a culture that the best like Drake can’t ignore.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I’ve always loved performing and I’ve been around music all my life so I just put the two together and realized I wasn’t too bad at it. I’m still discovering my sound.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
I have no fashion icons. I’m not really a fashion guy but I like what I like.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
The Drill has been making its waves on this side of the world in recent years and I’ve been loving the 808 slides vibe so I wanted to make a sound that was familiar but still new if you know what I mean.
Last year Davo (who features on the track) sent me a song he worked on and I loved the energy he brought to the song because he was telling his real-life story and I believed him when he rapped his lyrics. His delivery hit so hard that I knew I wanted to do something with the song but didn’t know what to do.
After the first COVID lockdown we met and created a drill beat based on his song that he sent me last year. So we started working on it a year later.
This is why the song starts with Davo because the beginning of the song is the same song he sent me with the exact same vocals he recorded that I got mastered. Writing the song was the easy part as we spent most of our time on the details of the beat. I also love writing about the things I want in life, it’s a cool way to vent.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
I find that it’s hard to catch a vibe when recording alone. I always like a vibe because it usually brings the best out of me, especially when people are around.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
I’m not the best at what I do but as I said in my lyrics “not here to take part, I’m here to take over” Inspired by Conor McGregor.
What are your plans for the near future?
I want to record live performances to show people why I’m entering the game.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Shout out to Davo who produced the beat and featured on the track. His ear for music is amazing and I look forward to showing people more of our work.
