The History of Country Music in the UK
Country music has had a niche following in the UK since the 1950s, with American artists like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash gaining a loyal fan base. However, it was in the 1990s that country music gained mainstream success in the UK.
One of the key figures in the UK’s rise in country music was Bob Harris, a radio DJ who started the BBC Radio 2 show “Country Club” in 1998. The show quickly became popular, featuring American and British country artists, and helped raise the country music profile in the UK.
The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a surge in popularity for country music in the UK, with acts like Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and Garth Brooks selling out arenas and topping the charts. British artists like The Shires and Ward Thomas also gained success in the genre.
In recent years, country music has grown in popularity in the UK, with festivals like Country to Country and The Long Road drawing large crowds. In 2020, the UK country music scene was recognized with the establishment of the UK Americana Awards, which celebrate the best in American roots music in the UK.
Overall, while country music has faced challenges in gaining mainstream acceptance in the UK, it has carved out a dedicated fan base and continues to thrive as a genre.
