INDIE SPOT
Interview with Singer and Songwriter Julian Sky
How did you come by your stage name?
Sky is part of my middle name; Skylar. I felt that it embodied the airy, open adventure in my sound.
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it?
I was a kid on a trip to Disneyland walking down the main street, and I saw this really older man – I mean REALLY old; could barely walk. But as soon as he sat down on the piano he played so beautifully and full of life. That was the first time music ever moved me and I decided I wanted to be a musician.
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
I met this fabulous female artist in college who wore these elegant clothes every single time you saw her. Eye-catching, and bold. I was super intrigued and decided to start looking the way I wanted and appeal more to my creative side. Now I’m a dress boot wearing, tatted up, pierced young man and I’d like to think people can tell a thing or two about me before I open my mouth.
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
So the funny thing about (Love at First Sight) is that I wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered it in one day. I met this beautiful goth girl who I absolutely fell for – and it was so effortless. I never had to try and impress her; it just happened. We talked all night long until I fell asleep in her lap like a child. It was the most at peace I’ve ever felt. Never worked out though, heard she was talking to some other guy, and I respect that.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
If only you could see my hard drive. I must have written well over 100+ songs in the latter half of 2020. After doing cover after cover, I sat there with this one and said, “Why am I gonna let this sit here when I know I’m not gonna return to it otherwise. Might as well just get it out there.” So I submitted it that same day and never thought twice about it.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
I’m the best at being me. Writing my own feelings, styling myself how I like; being myself. I’m not the only artist who lived on the streets, or fell in love…or fell in love at first sight; there are loads of other small acts out there, but I’m the only me. The only one that would voice these feelings in the way that I do.
What are your plans for the near future?
I’m currently working on a release schedule for this coming year, including a lot of original material I’ve been saving up, and some current ideas I’m throwing around in the studio. I want people to hear how I feel, and if they’re feeling the same way; sometimes that’s all it takes to help.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
To all my closest friends who never left my side and pushed me to keep going. All the people who tune in to my Instagram Livestream mini-concerts. An old professor and friend who taught me what I never thought to learn. And to the miss that makes me feel like gold.
How can fans find you?
I have an Instagram I’m frequently active on called Julianskymusic. You can also stream an of my music under the name Julian Sky.
